New 79 Bronco Project

So I'm giving up my 93 f150 as good as its been 2 me.. dropped the drive shaft out of it today, replaced the ujoint to make it a last just a bit longer. Both rear leaf shackles are broke so its just about parts time.

I found a 79 Bronco that I'm going to pick up. Its a complete project, I plan on replacing absolutely everything over the next year, starting with the brakes, suspension and steering components. Come spring I'd like to lift the body sand and paint the frame, fix the body with paint aswell as replace the interior with leather. In the next couple years I'd like to replace the engine and tranny with a crate motor, probably a built up 302.

I'll post pics tmrw once its delivered to get some opinions. Any tips on fixing these broncos up.

Thanks guys

Those Broncos are usually mechanically sound, of course there is the usual wear and parts that will need to be replaced, the biggest issue will probably be the rust, so be ready to inspect it closely and eliminate any rust you find before it becomes a problem.

Yay! Another 78-9 bronco project , make sure you do lots of pictures. I got my 78 project that is also my DD so i need to be able to drive it and fix stuff on the weekend. I already did the tranny rebuild and ujoints for the rear, along with most of the starting system replaced and the Track bar for steering. And tires. I don't have plans to pull the body or nothing, i don't have the equipment to do that nor the knowledge yet.

One question though, why a built 302? Why not something bigger? I'm not sure but i think they have crate 400-460s, mate that with a T-18 4spd and you'll be sitting pretty.

I don't so much have the know how either but have a really nice buddy who does lol. As far as the 302 goes I was looking for a 351M/400 crate but couldn't find one. That won't be for a long time. I'm Hoping to get a year or 2 out of the current 351 and c6. Anyway on my way to get her right now will post pics in a few hours.

So I showed up just as it was getting delivered, and heres what I found.

What I`ve noticed wrong so far in no particular order:

-missing coolant overflow reservoir
-right turn single light(dashboard indicator) is out
-highbeam does not appear to have an indicator(does it)
-temp gauge does not work
-water temp gauge does not work
-back window has been replaced with plexi glass(motor works but will not -move window up or down without someone guiding it in track)
-ALSO did not receive key for tailgate but po has found it and is going to mail it to me
-rockers need replaced, drivers floor pan needs replaced(patched for now) and small crack in floor of rear
-transfer case does not appear to shift to 4lo but can not be certain until theres brakes to actually test it
-NO BRAKES!!! like zero zilch!
-Power steering fluid leak(easy fix)

The good

It has obviously been well maintained for the most part, frame has been undercoated, where it is flaking off there is very little rust on frame which is a good sign. It`s also a bronco which is the best part about it. It needs a lot of work, but for the $500 I paid plus $100 delivery I couldn`t be happier.

What I did today:

-Ordered complete brake system and tie rod ends and ball joints
-bought all items for a tune up

Tmrw willl change oil and do whatever else I can.

Any advice on any of the issues that I have found so far would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all

The BF Goodrich tire up front looks ANCIENT, i would be looking into replacing them all, replace all the fluids, not just the oil (gearbox, differentials, radiator, transfer-case), check/replace all the rubber (belts, hoses, bushings, etc...). Clean all the electric connections and grounds, check the vacuum lines. And since you're already messing with the front-end, remember to lube everything throughly with grease.

Oh, i also forgot, get under the truck with your grease gun and grease the EFFF out of everything with a grease fitting on it, the truck looks good but i can tell it hasn't been driven in a while.

-right turn single light(dashboard indicator) is out - You can pull the gauge cluster out enough to get to the bulb which is on a little socket thing that turns and pulls out. No wires to it but there is connectors on the sides that touch the printed circuit board. Turn on your turn signal and slowly move it back and forth to see if it works if so, you have loose connections if not try a new bulb. I haven't pulled my cluster all the way out so i don't know what to do about loose connections and since i can't see back there i can't tell if i just needs glue or something.
-highbeam does not appear to have an indicator(does it) - It does have an indicator on top of the speedo, a blueish light usually just a small rectangle. Try the same method as the turn signal. If your high beams don't work at all but the low does, it may be the floor switch. Mine has been replaced, i still have a spare in the glove box.
-temp gauge does not work - Either try tracing the wire to see if it is corroded or broken and fix as needed or buy aftermarket. The PO for mine did.
-water temp gauge does not work - Same as the above except i think i only had 1 temp gauge for water. I don't know about your 2 temp gauges.
-back window has been replaced with plexi glass(motor works but will not -move window up or down without someone guiding it in track) - Open the access panel on the tailgate and either replace with real glass or try improving the mechs in there to work.
-ALSO did not receive key for tailgate but po has found it and is going to mail it to me
-rockers need replaced, drivers floor pan needs replaced(patched for now) and small crack in floor of rear

-NO BRAKES!!! like zero zilch!
-Power steering fluid leak(easy fix)
Pretty much the other stuff you seem to know ow to do, the stuff i listed are mostly things i thought of or things i have done, some of it is hard to understand but once you get in and look at it it makes sense.

As for the gauge thing, you should only have a temp gauge for coolant. if you have more than one i think it has been tampered with. You also have one for battery, oil pressure, gas, and speedo. My temp gauge doesn't work but i haven't tried fixing it cause i have an aftermarket one, i don't like it and it is placed stupidly but it works for now till i decide to work on it.

Good luck and if you got more questions i will see if i can help some how

Looks pretty good for its age. And it is my favorite color.

It does look pretty good, few spots of rust and it looked like a bullet hole or something on the door picture for the passenger side or just a shadow or something.
