I'm new to the forum and to the Ford scene and I'm looking at purchasing either an F-250 or F-350. We'll mainly use it to tow our 26 foot toy hauler 6 times a year and using it for Lowes runs.
I found a local one for sale. Here's the details:
1999 F250
115k miles
V10
4x4
4 inch lift
35 inch tires. 40% thread left on them.
Extended cab not crew cab.
Straight body, one litttle dent
The seller is asking $6750. is it a good price? what should i look for?
Sounds like its a pretty good price as long as its in good mechanical shape. Check the exhaust manifolds, they are prone to rotting out. Also, the 1999 has non performance improved heads so you will loose about 40 (i believe) HP than the 2000-2004 models. Other than that, the v10 is a solid engine and sounds like a nice truck to go along with it
That's pretty low miles, my '04 is on 108K and it doesn't use or leak any oil between changes, hasn't had any broken studs or anything else. Like Miles said, it'll have the non-PI heads, but you can always swap those out down the road. I'd look everywhere for rust (under the cab and bed, rear wheel well lips, etc) and check the maintenance history if you can, but for that money it sounds like a good buy.
Sounds like a winner to me, unless there are new developements.
The previous posters know their stuff and covered pretty much of it. Do your homework and good luck! There are a ton of us V10 owners here that love our gas guzzling brutes. haha I get 9-10 mpg low 8's towing my trailer.

Reason: add
Do you want a truck with a lift kit installed? Probably was a pavement princess but ya never know. Mileage is low for the year. 35" tires are not cheap to replace. If its an all spring lift kit I think the rear springs could be soft = not so fun towing but air bags can solve that. Extended cabs are fine, I had one, but you run out of room for passengers and stuff. Check for:
Rust
Brake wear
U-joints (axles & driveshafts)
Signs of leaks
Ball joints
Drive it (obviously, but check for steering or brake issues, odd sounds, etc...)
A 99' is going to be roughly 13 years old, nothing wrong but in my experience an older vehicle will need regular repairs if nothing has ever been fixes. Can you fix them yourself or will you be paying shop labor? If you check it out just dig and dig some more so you know what you're getting into.
The owner says that he installed all 4 springs back in 2003. Plus, a new steering arm, and a beefier steering stabilizer. Plus 4.30 gears...
Check out a thread in the V10 forum. Someone brought it back to life so it's at the top of the forum. It's all about what to look at for buying a super duty. Lots of good information.
