Question Buying a used f-250

Hello Board,
This is my frist post and I hope Im posting it in the right forum. Anyways I will be returning home to the Los Angeles area in a few months from living in the philippines for over a year and I will be looking to buy a used f-250 v10 with 410 gearing. I plan on using it to pull a boat not sure of the weight yet but the boat will be in the 26' to 28' range and I will also be getting a slide in camper in the near future probably in the 2000 pound range dry. This will be for weekend uses towing in the so cal area and a week or so yearly trip up north to Yosmite. I will also be using the truck for my day to day driving most likely I will be putting around 30 thousand miles a year on it.
Well if your still with me at this point I will get to the main part of my question, I have never bought a used truck before, the last truck I had was a new 1998 f-150 ext cab 3dr v8 5.4 triton. I dont know what a good range for mileage on a used truck is and how to judge what the price should be, I know of kelly blue book but is this the only site were I can get a good idea of a used truck price ? to give you and idea of what Im looking for here is a f-250 on ebay that you can look at to tell me if thats a good price or whatever. Well I hope I didnt bore you all with this post and I thank all in advance for any info and help,
regards,
SCMF

P.S. Also will this truck be ok for the bed load and the boat I want to pull.

I don't know about the v10, but for the powerstroke, this mileage would just be broke in. Some other places you can get values from are www.nadaguides.com and www.edmunds.com.

I don't think either the v10 or the powerstroke would have a problem with towing what you list above. You can also look on www.autotrader.com. Just another source to show you used vehicles and what they sale for. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I just picked myself up a 'new' F250 with the V10. It's a 2000 Crew cab short bed that had 111K miles on it, but only set me back 10,200. When I went looking, I was told the same thing about mileage, the Triton and Power Stroke engines are just getting broken in at 100K, so I wouldn't be afraid of the higher miles you might see. The diesel will undoubtably get better mileage than the V10, something you might want to consider. I was also told pre-2000's sometimes had auto trani problems, so you might want to look 2000 or newer. Found mine on Autotrader.com - might have to look for awhile for a good deal, but I thought mine was worth it, a Texas truck that is in great condition. Ebay is a good place to start, but it's popularity has driven up prices, so take the time to look around.

Good Luck!

I got transferred to Texas this summer from California so to compare prices in Texas and California aren't gonna be close. I bought a loaded pristine 99 crew cab with 88,000 miles on it for $11,000 here in Texas but the same truck in California would have cost probably $2k more. I found mine in the autotrader also. I know an out of state vehicle in California may be a pain to register but it's a thought.
It sounds like you'll be pullin' a lot of weight so the V10 or diesel is a must. 2K dry is pretty heavy so maybe a F350 SRW or a dually may be a consideration also. I sold my other truck to a guy from New York 2 months ago. He said in New York he couldn't touch a truck in the condition mine was in. One thing about Texas trucks, make sure they don't live next to the gulf as the corrosion on vehicles here can be awful if the trucks aren't taken care of. Also, at over 90,000 miles, the motor runs like a clock, the tranny shifts like new and the interior and exterior have both held up surprisingly well

Good luck in your hunt...

A F350 would be a better choice. The V10 only comes with 3.73 or 4.30 gears. Get the 4.30's if you have any hills.
