Was headed to town yesterday and met a truck in a curve at about 55 MPH. Suddenly my hood decides to open fully. All I could think of was "OH #%&@" and there goes a perfectly good windshield Guess I got very lucky though, all it did was tweak the RH hinge a little. Pulled over and forced the hinge back into place, closed the hood and went on my way..... but the hood flip kit is on the way from Mid-Fifty. This ain't happening again!!!!!
That happened to me back in about 1978 or 79. I was bringing the truck back home form the garage. My brother had dropped me off. I was traveling north and a south bound tractor trailer gave me a big gust of wind and the hood blew open. It flew back so far it cracked the windshield. I was able to pull off the road right there and put the hood down. Apparently one of the mechanics didn't have the hood closed properly. So one time in 33+ years ain't bad, don't jump to conclusions and do something drastic about your reverse hood! Ha-ha!
I had that happen 30yrs ago, my fault never closed the hood properly. My girl freind's screams are what filled my drawer's After that I made sure, every time I opened the hood it was shut properly. Month's after that I'd spray my butt and gotch with Pam, If it ever happened again all I'd have to do is take em off and shake em out.
I had that happen shortly after I got mine on the road a couple years ago.
I said to myself "lets see what this 460 with 273 gears will do". I got it up to about 90-95 and hit a bump in the road. Up it came! Only put a couple of dings in the cowl, thank goodness.
I welded a longer tip on the worn lever that holds the hood down AND I put a hood pin and safety chain up under the front lip of the hood.
Thats a scary tale to tell for sure, It could of ended very different for any of you guys. Id say that the Man upstairs was lookin out for yall. My safty latch works, but after hearing your stories, I think Ill research some backup hardware ,to keep that puppy closed, but good. Im glad your all ok.
Guys, hoods flying up on these old Fords is not something new. I've heard of this happening many years ago when they were fairly new. Think about how the whole front end assembly on these things just kinda floats and flexes. There is evidence that the hood on my '56 has been up. The adjustments and latch has to be right.
A few years ago had the hood pop off the first latch. I found the latch plate cracked. Glade the safety latch caught it. I replaced the old one with another from the spare parts pile. Glade you got stopped safe.
brian...
I thought about this and made a small modification to mine. I took a 4" long 1/4" bolt, cut the head off, welded a washer on it and drilled a hole in the hood pin. You put the bolt through the hole when the hood is closed, put a clip on the other side of the hood pin and it covers the underside of the latch. The washer is up against the hood pin on one side and the clip is up against the other side, the ends stick out about an inch on both side, also it acts as a good hood lock.
The hood pins is case hardened, so go slow with lots of pressure and fluid.

The decision for a front tilt hood was made long ago. I was planning to build my own, but life got in the way. I have a long trip coming up in less than 2 weeks and don't have time to do the engineering. I definately don't want to worry about this happening again during a 10K+ miles trip, far, far away from home.
