I put this on the Ex forum, no responses..... '05 Ex w/ 6.0 PSD... Issue: Fuel gauge shows 1/8+ when out of fuel (bad deal when wife thinks it still has fuel, yep she ran out 2x). Do I need to replace the sending unit in the tank? ($$?) Gauge head on cluster? Is there a way to test this w/o dropping the tank? Suggestions?
cant speak for this situation, but had a similar problem on my 06 F250. The gauge would be reading empty when I know there was still some fuel left. And even had the sender put the ECM into limp mode because it thought I was out of fuel. I pulled the tank down and yanked the sender and looked that the little potentiomenter and just above the lower limit was a burned spot in the assemble. Anything above 1/8 of a tank was perfect, but get close to that and all crap broke loose.
If the gauge cluster is reading full after you fill the tank, and then the gauge gradually goes down as the fuel is used, then I don't think it will be the cluster.
It sounds more likely that the problem is in the tank. If you are lucky it might just be the wires tangled and keeping the float from going all the way down. Has the sender ever been removed, like for a harpoon mod? If so, maybe the float rod got bent?
Unfortunately, it is a lot of work to drop the tank, and then find out you need a sending unit that you haven't got on hand. So you might have to do the job twice.
I have heard of the plastic strainer falling off so the tanks draw straw cant suck below 1/8 of a tank. You can see the plastic screen in the pic I stole from a google image search.
