Anyone got some input on how to remove the rear axle brake drums on a 97 Cavalier? I did the front pads and discs for my neighbour on Sunday, but because the Cavaliers had 2 different sizes of rear brakes I had to scope it out before ordering parts.
There is no access hole to back off a star wheel.
I imagine I could just give it the hammer treatment, but if someone has any useful input, that would be greatly appreciated.
GM does that sometimes, my '71 C-10 had 3/4 ton rear brakes, yet there was no such option listed on the build sheet. Usually its the independents like International who substituted different vendors that can give you fits ordering parts.

Oh I ran into that at work last year. Working on a Ford LCF doing rear brakes, the Ford dealer did not stock the parts. Had to get them from an International dealer, yet they had to order the parts through the Ford warehouse with an International part number on a Sterling axle. Spent more time chasing down parts than it did to actually replace them.
You got no responses because your description of the problem sucked. Describe what's happening when braking? You had a symptom that made you check the rear brakes; describe that. Are the rear brakes locking up prematurly? Does this occur more in slippery road conditions?
