they work completely differently. RAS is a supplementary spring... a sway bar is the only thing that will actually apply tension to the opposite side of the vehicle as it sways/rolls.

I think that "tension" makes my 2wd turn like crap. Once I get around to ordering one I will try it with and without and see what it does
Be cautious. Others on here have gone to less reputable sources for RAS and found that it is the older outdated model that several members have had fail on the road. The Ex is a big heavy pig. Buy smart. If you can find it for less elsewhere make sure you are getting current product. They don't revise these things for fun.
It used to no ride like it did 15k miles ago when I bought it. I know the hellwig is used to keep the body roll out but I did not have any to begin with. I guess I was just trying to be like everybody else that has one LOL. I did not take in consideration that my truck sits lower than a 4wd. It does its job, when making a right turn out of a parking lot it fights to keep the right side down. I think a little lean is not that bad. I was curious if the RAS worked independently that maybe it would work better than the hellwig. I dont know
I don't have the hellwig but mine does have a stock sway bar. So I don't know. But every vehicle I've had that I put an aftermarket sway bar on the rear of, I always felt like they turned in sharper afterwards... you are the first person I've heard that doesn't like the hellwig.
I am getting ready to find me another travel trailer so I checcked JC Whitney to look at getting an RAS. While I was there I saw where the people that purchased the RAS also purchased or looked at the super springs SuperSprings Self-Adjusting Suspension Stabilizers . I have the helwig sway bar and with mine being 2wd I really could not tell a big difference on the ssway after installing it other than when leaving a parking lot turning onto the main road it almost bounces me and my wife out of the seat. Has anybody tried the supersprings? I know there are alot of spring swaps going on and am curious if this maybe be an option other than the Hellwig or just go with the RAS. thanks!
Its a shame the part number they list isn't the correct one for our trucks. If you have a 1977 or 1978 GMC truck, that is a great deal but otherwise you might want to get the right part.
I added the Hellwig to the rear of my 2wd Ex.
While before it would just go over the train tracks (the tracks
cross the road @ a 45 degree angle) and bounce,
with the hellwig (or any other rear sway bar) now when it goes
across the tracks and sort of throws you right and then left.
Similarly coming out of a driveway with the elevated curb/sidewalk
and turning right as the rear wheels drop down the Ex sort of
throws you left and then right.
I love my hellwig and it's great 98% of the time,
except as described above.
Is the Helwig the same for the 2wd and 4wd? If it is and you are looking to dump it, I'll take it off you hands.
Cowboy with your lift you will need to add some length to the end links to keep the ends of the swaybar parallel to the frame. When I swapped in my rear modded B codes and taller blocks I cut off the vertical rod on the Helwig's end links and welded in new thicker longer threaded rods to allow the sway bar ends to stay level.

Thanks for the 411, I know about the links.
BDS makes an add on sway bar link kit for $75...

At last somebody knows what I am talking about. It may be that I live close to town and 75% of my driving is in town and that's why I notice it a lot more.
