Which Ignition Setup for my 400?

Hi all. I am in the process of rebuilding my '78 F150 and was wondering if there was any reason to go with a separate distributor and ignition module vs the all in one modules? Is there any reason to forgo the cleaner look of the all in one to go the separate route?

Thanks
~Chad

You wont gain anything by switching to a one wore dizzy, duraspark distributors are fine. However you might want to considering upgrading to MSD 6al or similar box.

OK, so what you are saying is keep my current distributor and get an MSD 6AL? That is definitely an option. Would require me to clean up the current distro . Part of the reason I would like to switch is to clean things up a little bit, so the all in one would be a better option in that regard.

Thanks,
~Chad

I switched out my entire ignition for a msd 6a box, blaster coil, msd pro billet dist. and msd wires and I love it. Cost a little bit of money but my truck runs way better.

Or you could grab an HEI module from a Chevy and run an external system. If you go that route you could probably do it for junkyard entrance fee and like 5 bucks for the module. Our trucks don't scream into the high rpm band so most of the high price ignition systems are just a waste. If you don't like that idea just throw in a pertronix ignitor. I think I threw an ignitor 2 in my 390 3 years ago and I haven't even touched the ditsy since. It's a two wire setup. Easy as can be.

I was (incorrectly) under the impression that the pertronix and msd distributors do not require an external coil. If I am going to upgrade the distributor I might as well go with the DUI and get the all in one package. Plus then I can get it with a blue cap :P.

I don't know if this what you mean by clean but this is my set up on my big truck-- stock dizzy with MSD 6al and blaster coil.

It looks something like this.

I have the 6al box in the cab because the truck frequently sees mud, and water.

That is very clean. But also not much cheaper than getting a DUI dizzy. $260 for the pair brand new vs $370 for the DUI.

Or 50-100$ off of Craigslist. This has a rev limiter built in also.

I'm not saying the DUI is a bad idea though.

Unless yopu have some kind of a race motor used in timed events imo there is no reason to stray from the stock system. It's hard to beat and if it does break down you can buy any of the parts to get it going again at any parts store. If your running some aftermarket system your stuck waiting for a tow so you can get it home and get the (expensive) part ordered.
