E40D swap question

E40D swap question

I have a 1995 F350 Powerstroke with and E40D tranny that I am swapping with an E40D out of a 1994 F250 (IDI). Using the ATSG manual that I purchased I have verified that the tranny in my F350 is the 1996 version of the E40D. I was told by the owner of a local transmission service shop that I need to swop the solenoid packs between the trannys, which I have done.

My question is... Is the MLPS on the 1994 E40D and the 1996 E40D the same? I have read posts on different forums that indicate that I need to swop the MLPS as I did the solenoid packs. I have also read other posts that indicate there is no need to do this. I am a little confused on this issue.

Dave, the idi E40D trucks used to use an older mlps.however it was revised to accept the newer '95 plug due to moisture getting in.the parts #'s for updated mlps appear to be the same of that of the 95-97 psd e40d trucks.so i would use your current '96 mlps.
however if your plug matches up and connects to the idi trans replacements mlps,then that means,that mlps has already been updated to the '95 version and you could use that one too.
so in short,it looks as if; if your factory '96 plug fits into either mlps= your good to go.
if im wrong,the worse thing you'll get is a mlps code and know to change it.

the '95 E40D received some HD upgrades.if at all possible,try finding a newer E40D.if $ is tight,and,or the trucks condition doesn't warrant much else to get you buy,then just don't go hot rodding or building up your engine to make more power.when towing,you may want to take it a bit easier than you used to. with the psds extra grunt,and a weaker trans she has a decent chance to hold you over for a few years until you replace it with an upgraded unit,or truck,whichever your plans may be if you drive her responsibly.

Thanks for your answer.... I recently purchased the 1995 F350 from a friend and am in the process of fixing it up. The E40D that was in it up shifted hard in all gears. I had it diagnosed at the tranny shop hoping it was electrical but was told that the problem was not electrical. So, I purchased a 1994 F250 with 20,000 miles on a rebuild.

oh thats great then.that rebuild meets at least '95 specs.so you should be good to go.
if you can swing it.now is a very good time to consider a triple disc converter.
you might be tempted to re-use your converter from the '96 psd E40D (as the one in the idi's has just 4 studs instead of 6.) but it's best to at least buy another new converter for it.

Thanks again for your reply. The torque converter that is currently in my 95 F350 is a triple disc converter. The tranny was rebuilt 55,000 miles ago. Will it be ok to use it on the swop tranny?

My plan is to rebuild the tranny that is coming out of the 95 F350. I have never done anything like that before and have always wanted to. I have an acquaintance that has rebuilt ford trannys including the E40D who has offered his guidance and assistance. I have read about some people doing what they are calling a "1997 update" to their pre 97 E40D. I have also seen for sale a 97 update kit. Is this something that I should do to My E40D? Are their any other things that I should do or add to my E40D during the rebuild? By the way, I am not doing any kind of modifications to this truck that increase horse power. I will however be pulling a trailer from time to time with as much as a 7,000 pound load.

I'd put a triple disk converter and a valve body from racer x and upgrade the trans cooler

Dave,i would personally use your good triple disc converter in the rebuilt (with 20k miles) '94 E40D trans.install a shift kit(or performance valve body) ,external filter,a trans temp gauge (and don't let temps get over 200.if that means installing a larger aux cooler,so be it) and run the truck.it will likely last many years if you maintain it properly.
you can build up your '95 trans will all kind of goodies,and have it ready just in case.but if you take good care of that fresh rebuilt '94,you may never need to put it in.
