Manual transmission question

The other week I had a customer with a ZF trans looking for a PTO. My question came about when Muncie said they needed to know if it was a Wide ratio or a narrow ratio transmission. What exactly are we looking at when speaking of this ratio?

They are asking about the spread between first gear ratio and overdrive ratio. There were different ratios for gas and diesel engines. I think the diesel was a close ratio and the gas a wide ratio, but it's been quite a while and I could have it backwards.

On the S5-42, the wide ratio is 5.72 first to .76 fifth and the narrow is 4.14 first and .77 fifth. These numbers should be on a ID tag on the side of the case. The narrow ratio was only available with diesel engines as far as I know.
