I haven't been involved with this process, but I think I should make my feelings known here. We had a discussion several years ago about the use of the term Nor-Cal in referring to our chapter. Unfortunately, it's become a very over-used term in the North state, seems like every other business is Nor-cal this or nor-cal that. And to top it off, there's a sort of a gang connotation attached to it as of the last few years. I'm not sure where you got the lettering style that you used on the second and third examples above, but it looks to me very much like the gang-related one and it might not be a very good idea to put something like that on our trucks, especially in gang territory.
Just sayin'...
EDIT: :Looks like I answered my own question to an extent. The Nor Cal logo Jim used appears to be the logo for a clothing line:
And from Wikipedia, on the use of the nautical star:
The Nautical Star is heavily confused with the Nor-Cal or Northern California Star according to ones geographical location. This tattoo which has been affiliated with a vast majority of Northern California gangs regardless of their own affiliation amongst each other. The only typical variation of the Nor-Cal Star is the color on the left side of each leg of the star. The right side always remains black normally.
I remember this discussion, Dan. Personally, I don't know first hand anything about the "NorCal" gang reference, except that it was brought up in a previous discussion. Guess I live in a pretty protected environment out here in the boonies. But I do remember that discussion, where I was informed of the gang reference. I remembered that discussion when I first saw the proposed drawings but, like I said, I don't know first hand of these gangs so I kept it shut.
If this is a real issue, then I suppose we really need to break away from the use of the term "norcal". All three of the proposals have this term so maybe we need to consider putting a hold on this poll, until the proposals are tweaked. Maybe spelling out "Northern California Chapter"?
What say ye, oh mighty Chapter Leader? Time to hold, re-think and re-poll at a later date?
Okay, let me get this straight. The original thread for the decal idea was presented on Feb 8th, 2012. And after three and a half weeks of submitting designs, revising designs, getting design ideas from other members, and finally starting a vote thread on a design of choice, a concern over "wording" comes up now? Interesting. All three designs have the Nor-Cal wording, and all three were posted before the vote thread was made. Something could have been said then. Something could have been said back when my design was the only design out there, and it had Nor-Cal instead of Northern California. However, it wasn't...
Oakland Raiders jackets and hats also have a gang connotation to them, but that does not stop Raider fans from buying and wearing them. The lettering style in the 2nd and 3rd designs is called "Old English" and I agree it seems to be popular with the gangs of Latin persuasion, however, I see it did not bother the SoCal chapter when they came up with a design, and frankly, I believe there are a lot more gangs in So-Cal then there are in Nor-Cal. I know they did not use the Old English style (font), but they still used the So-Cal wording.
I say if TigerDan is the only one to object to the wording, then we leave it alone. This is, after all, a democracy. And he had plenty of time to voice his concerns about it before now. Nobody who commented on any of the designs ever mentioned anything about a gang connotation. However, if there are more members out there that also agree that we should not use the Nor_Cal wording, then I say we just drop it.
I'm just stating my opinion on it and putting it out there for consideration. I didn't have much of a chance to read the other thread till now, been kinda busy with things and haven't had much time for the forum lately. Really, you guys do whatever you like, makes no real nevermind to me.
I'm tired tonight. Too tired to type my thoughts so It'll wait until tomorrow, suffice to say, I'm in the "Keep it" camp and will explain my thoughts tomorrow.
I actually like the first one, even with the use of Nor-Cal. It's simply the Nor Cal logo on the second and third ones that strikes a dissonant chord with me.
But I'll drop it there and refrain from any further comment.
Dan, I read your link to the earlier reference from JD about the use of "norcal" way back from the other discussion we had back six or seven years ago. That was the discussion I remembered having long ago that I referenced, but like I said, chose to keep that door closed as I don't know first hand of any gang concerns, living way out here...
I also saw the edit you made on post #2 on this thread. I see your statements as valid and with merit. I receive your caveats and don't see anything wrong with you bringing them up now, as it would be better now than to realize a problem after they are finally created. I know you're busy, as am I.
For the record, whether we keep nor-cal, tweak it to northern cal chapter, or whatever, doesn't worry me at all. I don't think it is a concern way out here in my neck of the woods, but for you all in the heart of the Northern Cal valleys, IDK... It's up to you all. I really don't care what it says. Just make sure you all can live with your decision. Now is the time to ensure the logo's correctness. Take Dan's comments as valid and make your decision based on what you can live with, or not live with, no matter when he has time to make them. Better now than after the logo is on your window eh? I don't think you can chastise Dan for not having time to read and comment on OUR time frames as not all of us are on the same schedule. Dan is one busy dude.
EDIT: :Looks like I answered my own question to an extent. The Nor Cal logo Jim used appears to be the logo for a clothing line:
nikmish used that, not I. So, it looks like we are almost back to square one. After reading the Wikipedia article it is obvious we cannot move forward with what we have. I don't want a one design vote, and I sure don't want our decal to be associated with any gangs in nor-cal. I have already changed the wording on mine. If nikmish wants to revise his with a different style of wording, and add the FTE url to either of his designs, then we can have another vote. Or maybe Shameless will have his done in time to be added.
Since whatever design we choose is going to be our official logo, and will presumably be used for years to come I would prefer one that everyone can agree on, and that will not set off any red flags anywhere. I realize that trying to please everyone is going to be next to impossible, still I say we extend the time to come up with a design to the end of this month. This way, maybe someone else who didn't have the time to make a design can do so. And those that did, can revise theirs with all the necessary info, and without any gang connotations.
I was in such a hurry to get something on my truck to show my enthusiasm for this chapter that I was willing to accept almost anything to make it happen. However, as stated above, whatever is chosen will be here for years, so what is another few weeks of waiting if it means we can get a design we all agree on?
So, Saturday March 30th will be the deadline for all potential designs for our decal. Then on April 1st, I will put up another poll thread like this one, and we can vote on which design to use.
And before I forget, my apologizes to Dan, I know you are busy in RL, and being superman...er...I mean super moderator, and I also forgot that nikmish's designs did not even appear until page 5 or 6 of the original thread, so they have not been out there for three and a half weeks.
I will make a new thread and put my current design in it, and I request that anyone who wishes to submit a design use that thread and not the old one.
