The metal brace that runs along the bottom of the dash, where the hood-release handle resides, has broken completely in two at the parking-brake assembly mounting-bolt.
This looks to be a night-mare of a spot to access for repair.
Someone said that this metal brace runs all the way across the truck; is this true ??
Does anyone have pictures showing this brace exposed and just what all I am going to have to remove to access it for repairs ??
Your whole dsah will have to come out for either welding or replacement. Its fairly straight forward, all the screws are phillips head, and there are a few bolts that hold the dash frame to the cab. I've taken my dash apart before. Just remember where all those screws came from.
Right, there are a handful of bolts holding the frame assembly to the cab, I think they're 10 MM.
And various screws holding the plastic to the frame sub-assembly.
I would be hard-pressed to want to go through all that work, though - the wiring harness will need to come off, the HVAC vents & controls, it'll take you a couple hours just to get the frame assembly removed from the truck much less getting it separated from the plastic.
I would be looking at applying a patch with everything still in the truck - maybe bolt or rivet a patch across the two halves. Might involve cutting or drilling away some of the plastic but I'd bet it'd be easier than removing & re-installing the entire thing. Like 4x4 above, I've done this, too, it's gonna be time-consuming.
I just went through this same thing a year ago. It seems like a comon problem.
I took the whole dash apart and had the lower brace welded.
Taking the dash apart isn't hard, it's just time consuming. It took me a day to take everything apart and a day to put it back together. 5 minutes to weld the thing...

I had never heard of this problem before but anything is possible.

I removed one (entire assembly) in a JY to take home, took at least 3 hours just to get it off. It's in the rafters in my garage right now, waiting while I gather stuff up.
Took off a different one so they wouldn't charge me for it, I only wanted the bare cab on that one.
Bought yet another one for my bro's '93 Taurus.
How long it takes I think depends on your desire to not damage things. I can easily understand a day to get everything apart, though - hence my suggestion of a piece of steel stock bolted to both sides as a patch. It'll be uncomfortable and something of a PITA but so is removing the thing....
BTW, Ralph, those are pretty big pictures for a dialup user....

It was already uploaded to my Photobucket account.

That exploded diagram and those pictures are just what I needed to see.
I have an old-school Ford dealer in town who just might have one of those braces/reinforcements laying buried in dust.
Thanks.
No problem. If you need some help during the removal, let one of us know, and we will help all we can. Make sure you check back either way and let us know how you fixed it.
