You don't gain mileage with E85, you lose it. Each gallon has less power potential than a gallon of gasoline, so for each quantity of ethanol injected you will actually loose power/mileage over gasoline.

Flex Fuel

It's so rare to find that option in the South that it's not worth the money.

E85 is junk! You don't want anything to do with it!

Why would you want to decrease your MPG? Snowseeker and Hasteranger are correct. E85 has less energy and will decrease and not increase your MPG. The only reason to like E85 is if you or your family are some how tied to corn farming.

Well this topic will hit a nerve!

I will qualify myself by saying that Im not an expert but I am in the business of supplying corn to the ethanol industry and have sat on a BOD during the development and buildout of one ethanol plant so I do have a bias. I also own a 2004 5.4 Ex that is NOT a flexfuel vehicle but I occasionally splash blend 1 part E85 with 4 parts reg gasoling (I assume that it is E10) so that I end up with about an E25/E30 making the finished product cheaper than regular E10 with no detrimental preformance affects. I can do this at my local station that has its E85 pump along side its regular pumps. I have no data and make no claims beyond saying that I have seen no difference other than saving me money. There are studies that show that mid-range blends, up to about E30, will show little or no loss in fuel economy and in some vehicles may show improvement in fuel economy. American Coalition for Ethanol : Home

It is too bad that domestic biofuels have to be such a political hot topic but regardless of where you find yourself on the issue, US foreign oil imports are dropping partly because of the increased production and use of domestic biofuels.

Kepp "splashing" that E85 at your truck and soon you'll be "splashing" your money out to get new injectors.

"Wow... i think this had something to do with my starting problem.

This is really disheartening as i built this car for E85. After only 3 tanks and i got this much gunk! The car started having idle problems and leaning out so i knew something was up with the fuel system. The last thing i checked was the injectors because of how little E85 they saw. Man was I blown away with what i found.

this is after only cleaning the tips off.

I cleaned up the injectors with some starting fluid and I am running a tank of pump gas through it now.

I'm just kinda mad that it is this bad with so little E85 use. "

E85 is not good for your injectors or your wallet. Just not worth the money and that dang ethanol is causing all the prices of feeding my cattle to go up significantly!

Talking

I have a flex fuel truck, mine runs on biodiesel and unfortunately petroleum when it gets too cold. What's a "spark plug"?

Ethanol is good for drinking, thats about it.

Snowseeker,

Perhaps E85 is cleaning out your fuel system
(similar to biodiesel in a PSD),
so maybe once the gunk is removed it would not be such a PITA.

I also hear that just the standard "up to 10%" ethanol gas
causes rubber hoses to fail quicker on lawn mowers and other
gas powered things.

Misky..you are correct, non-flexfuel designed vehicles have issues with hoses etc. However vehicles designed for for flexfuel have no issues and fwiw those flexfuel designed vehicles can come off the assemly line with NO increased cost to the consumer vs an non flexfuel vehicle.

Today's ethanol price is about $1 a gallon cheaper than gasoline. If we want cheaper fuel, we can have it, we jast have to get past the negitive spin.

Yes, many of small engines went up in smoke because of ethanol.

Cleaning the fuel system or not (Why doesn't the filter catch it?) I wouldn't take the risk.

The one thing I like about Ethanol is the higher octane rating. The 2009 F-150 with the 5.4 is an example of capitalizing on this through proper tuning. On Ethanol, the F150 is rated at 320hp and 390lb.-ft; on gasoline, the same engine in the same vehicle is rated at 310hp and 365lb.-ft.

Cellulosic ethanol becoming viable would be great. We'll have to keep waiting for that though.
