Lesson #1, An ameture who really wants a desiel shouldn't go out on his own! Just bought a 99 F250SD w/ 243000 miles and later noticed a whine but couldn't locate so I took it to my friendly Ford dealer. He says my turbo is about to go and that I don't want that to happen (for obvious reasons). SO, any advice about changing one or where to find a rebuilt one would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the dealer qouted $1100 to install a Ford rebuild ($700 parts+labor). Should I bite the big one and let him do it? Thanks again.
Welcome to the site. Are you sure about this turbo? What are the symptoms. Given the milage I wouldn't be too surprised. Is it only during a long pull or between gears? You may want to consider an aftermarket turbo for not much more. There are some great alternatives to the factory Garrett. Stay online a do a little research. The best thing you can do as a new diesel owner is educate yourself. Search this site and let the experience (or inexperience) of those before you save you a lot of grief.
Get that sucker fixed...before it fixes you.
It would be interesting to know if the truck still has an original turbo, or if its already been replaced earlier. If it's still original, it's a good sign the previous owner did his routine maintenance
You might want to check out the Banks package. It will liven up that diesel so it really sings. If not, shop the various local turbo shops for a repair quote.
It is actually making two sounds. Noise one is a real tinny rattle that starts at 35 mph slowing down. Noise two is a shrill bearing noise that can be heard at idle and goes away when the throttle is pressed. I went all over the truck with a stethescope and could not pin point either sound??
The turbo is a Garrett with an AlliedSignal name plate part # 991966C91. I assume its original but not sure.
Do you have any web addresses to check for replacements? Thank you very much. Can't wait to get her back on the road!
$700 isn't bad. The closest upgrade turbo will run about $1600. If you have a local turbo shop you can get a new bearing cartridge put in yours for less than replacement cost. Also, removing/installing the turbo really isn't that hard (if you are mechanically inclined), save a bunch of cash doing the labor yourself.
Man powerstroke250, don't scare me like that I want to thank all for thier advice and input. The turbo is off and headed to the shop. Will be around 600 to overhaul. Just hope I can get that monster back in Can't wait to see how many "noises" that clears up! Thanks again.
