rear dana 44 problem

rear dana 44 problem
on my 77 i have dana 44 rear..when i rebuilt my 351w few years ago..i had open the four barrel up taking off and strip the axle ..took me forever to find another one cause at the time i did not know what kind it was..but mechanics around here said them type or rearends are common to eat up axles..now in alot of books and internet they say it is a heavier duty rear than the 9 inch..is this right?...and if so has anyone had this problem with there dana...

The D44 is much weaker than the 9" or the 8.8". I think the 8.8" is the strongest 1/2-ton axle, but I'm sure plenty of people will disagree. In any case, you'll have MUCH better luck finding a good, cheap 8.8" than a 9".

humm ..that is funny in the haynes manual for 73 to 79 ford trucks it states the dana is the heavier duty rearend than the 9 inch..in other books it shows the dana use in the corvette and jeeps and all kinds of other trucks..
