I have a 01 F-150 4.6 ,the question is...in Iowa we have temps
in the high 90's with humities in the 96-100 percent range,
and then we have winters that have temps 30-60 below with
wind chills. Can i run 5w30 all climate non synthetic oil when
my owners manual calls for 5w20??? that seems allitle thin
during the summer, but 5w30 maybe to thick during the winter
are there oil pump/valve issues?? or is viscosity a non issue
between 20 and 30 weight??? dave

Hey Dave:
I live in minnesota and the 5w-20 synthetic will hold up all year, you just do not want to take it past 5000 miles. so I would stay with the 5w-20
I often wonder, does your engine know or even care what the outside temp. is when it gets to operating temp? Think about it, no matter what the outside temp is, it will certainly be MUCH hotter inside the motor and today's oils have flash points of around 400 F. I say use the Motorcraft or Castrol 5w20 to avoid warranty hassles and stay with 3,000 mile intervals, that's what I'm doing with my '02 Ranger.
anywhere between 3000 and 5000 mile drain intervals is good with motorcraft 5w-20 it is a group III, I change it between 4500 and 5000 with no problem, Hey guys got another question for you, and I did not know this until today, Ford owns Motorcraft, maybe I knew it and just never thought about it, or didnt care, but it seems funny that a car company would recommend you use their oil, maybe they should give it to us free of charge (lol)
Went to walmart,Bought 6 quarts of 5w20 motorcraft,the only
brand on stock...1.77 per qt. now i guess we'll see. i have been
a diehard valvaline guy forever, but it seems motorcraft/conoco
oil is well thought of....and so we'll give it a try. i just bought this truck,2001 F-150 4.6, so i have no idea what was in it prior to
buying it. First roadtrip revealed 18.5mpg hiway.....is that about right? my non tranny having dakota 4.7 got about 16 so i'm happy. thanks for the advice guys, this whole synthetic thing is
new to me.......Dave
Dave,
If you have been using Valvoline All Climate, it ranks just below Walmarts Super Tech in virgin analysis. Not one of Valvolines finer products. The Motorcraft 5w-20 is pretty stout stuff. I haven't had time to do a head to head comparison between it and Mobil One but when I do have the time I will post the comparison.
I have a 02 Supercrew with the 4.6 and hiway mileage is 22-23 and town 18-20. I am a conservative driver and most don't do that well.
I have been using valvoline products for 'bout 16 years now
i dont have alot of faith in "studies" I have faith in results and the
results are that i have used all climate in the dodges that i have
owned , and the wifes 2000 explorer.146,000 miles on my 91
dakota, and approx. 40,000 on the explorer the oil changes clean
and i have had no oil related problems.soooo, all the chemistry,
numbers, snakes, rattles and smokey incense doesnt get rid of the
fact i have had great results with this oil and will continue to use
it. i believe all valvoline products are top rate.
Dave....
Valvoline makes a 5w20 in the All Climate line, but I don't know if it meets the Ford WSSM2C153H spec for 5w20 oil. If so, it should specifically state that spec on the bottle. For the best oil and no warranty hassles, use oils meeting that spec. Castrol and Motorcraft do. I am not even considering the new 0w20 Mobil1, I can't see a reason to use $5 oil when the $1.77 stuff works great.
I have a co-worker that uses mobil one and swears by it, another
fellow has a '90 something F-150 "stretch" version, the truck must
be 15-17 ft long..he uses 5w15 synthetic i want to say quaker state? and he says that his mpg has improved by 2-2.5 mpg.
but i hear ya on the warranty issues, i bought the extended
warranty that goes out to 100,000 mi. I read the small print
and it is almost **** as to maint requirments ect.....but the
motorcraft oil seems to have a great reputation around hear
which is good enough for me. and your right 1.77 per qt
and 3.79 for a filter, ya just cant beat that .....esp. quality
at that price...........Thanks......Dave
