I have a 1974 f100 4x4 with dana front and rear axles. The transercase is a Dana 21. Both the front and rear have drum brakes and the truck has manuel steering. The motor has been swapped out a few years ago from a 390 to 427FE and has a standard transmission.
Here's what I'd like to do, a friend of mine has a 1985 f150, don't know what the front and rear axles are or the transfer case. I would like to take the front axle and disc brake and install them on my 74, I'll need to take the steering column and steering box. Then I would like to take the automatic transmission and transfer case and install it. Next is the rear axle this seams pretty simple, I think.
So does anyone think this will work and if so any clue what I need to do.
That's a really bad move lotsa. Work 2 get some of fords worst hooked 2ya any decent motor will eat the 8.8 rear & the flex front + forswear issues advise late 70's maybe junkyard
I like how every 360 somehow becomes a 390, 428 or 427...
Pictures of the crossbolts, side oiler passage and screw-in freeze plugs or you don't have a 427. Or a picture of the motor mount adapter plate for a pre 66 427 block.
Then, and only then you may or may not be taken seriously.
I would start lookin for a dana 44 w/disc or go big and get a 60. for the rear look for a 70 10.25 or a 14 bolt easy to install disc brakes on. Steering I would swap to 78 79 style. Transfer case a no brainer get a 205 and be done with it. Just my 2 cents.
I don't think the '85 would have a straight front axle under it. If you are going to go to all that trouble, like already said, find a straight axle Dana 44 front. They should be a dime a dozen in your local scrap yards. All of the stuff you want to switch will not just bolt in, they are two totally different trucks. If you have good fab skills then you could go about it but one must ask himself is it worth all that work when you could just go buy a later model dent side donor truck ? A '78 or '79 would have everything you want already in it.
Agreed. You would be taking out better stuff to swap in much lighter duty, inferior components. I would do as others said and find a '78 or '79 and use all the components from that truck. They would bolt in and be much stronger. From 1980-1997, only 1 tons had solid front axles. 1/2 and 3/4 tons had the split front axles. (which are junk)
