If you can convert a 4x2 into a 4x4, can u make the 4x4 awd, IF you open 2 t-cases, pull 2 of the same gears from each to make them mess in 1 case to give you 1:1 betwwen both output shafts ?
High range is 1:1 on a 4wd transfer case. The problem is that all 4 wheels move at slightly different speeds, especially in the corners and a 4wd system is locked 100% front/rear. So it will bind up on hard pavement. An AWD system has some sort of differential that allows the front and rear axle to turn at different speeds.
There were some fords in the 70's that had AWD systems and most people converted them to the standard 4wd setup. It would be interesting to take a modern AWD transfer case out of say a jeep and use that as they have torque biasing which sends power to the wheels that grip.
The Mountaineers and Explorers were 5.0 at first, then they switched to the modular motors in the later explorers.
Does it matter what motor the t-case sits behind as long as the transmission bolt pattern and output shaft is the same?
the explorer / mountaineers that had 5.0 were mostly awd. they were 4r70w equiped and use a borg 4404 transfer case with a viscous clutch . as far as front end they use a ifs with cv shafts . i think dana 30 or 40? anyhow, that is the case and trans they use

if you are wanting a awd truck then put a older NP203 transfer case in there !
fact was it was the best transfer case for awd !
you would have to keep your front hubs locked but that is the case with any awd !
put a posi in the rear and you would be good to go !
my old truck with the 203 and posi in the rear was the best truck for driving in the snow !
lots of people hate that transfer case , it was solid built !
