DP tuner and Exhaust Temps/stock

DP tuner and Exhaust Temps/stock
Hey all,
I am looking at getting a DP tuner for my 97 powerstroke. Everything currently is stock on the truck. I typically pull loads up to 16,000 lbs. The tunes I am looking at getting are:
0. Stock
1. 80 econo
2. 40 tow
3. 60 tow
4. Decel
I am curious what everyone think about exhaust temps, tranny temp, etc. I know everyone says a person should always add guages to monitor this, but I am wondering if I use the 40 tow on loads above 14,000 and the 60 at loads below, if I would have any issues?? I spoke to jody and he made it seem as if I'd be okay with those settings.
Let me know what everyone thinks,
Thanks and new to the forum!!!

If you dont already have some guages... Pyro or boost,I don't even wanna say you would be ok, each truck is very different you could have boost leaks somewhere another truck doesn't causing your egts to much higher then another truck.. Gauges really are not that expensive to protect your investment especially since your dropping 3-4 hundo on your tuner... And once you start you are gonna wanna keep going; exhaust and intake were my first mods,AFTER GUAGES... lol... Gauges first!!!!

You can pull more in the hotter tunes, just won't be able to push it as hard due to egt's. If you're on flat road, you can run hotter tunes with the weight. But yeah, Pyro's a must... you basically "drive by pyro". I don't know how my splits compare to your singles (will find out in a week or two when I get done with this '97), but I was able to do 7K+ with my 80t, cruise set, 35's, mountains, etc. and not get too hot. I got to 1250* a time or two, but it was usually 1100 or lower. I only had to cut the cruise once due to egt's and that was over the course of a 2.5hr trip.

So say you hit 1200 degrees on your pyro pulling a grade, what are you options? Drop down a gear or stop and let it cool down or what? What happens if you are in 3rd gear and your still creeping up the grade, do you grab down another gear and then do 20 or so up the grade? Lastly, would it ever be feasible to use 4x4 high to pull a grade on bare pavement?

Best bet is to take it down one and get the boost back up when your pulling a grade like that. The last thing you want to do is completely stop and let it cool. The minute you start getting into the throttle again you'll be in the same situation, plus you just lost time.
