I just bought a bedside tool box for my '66 ford... It was removed from a '66 Ford LB Styleside, which is what I'm going to be putting it in. Other than the obvious BIG hole I've got to cut, what else do I need to do to install it?? They included all the hardware, but I'm not sure what goes where. Does anyone have photos or instructions? Thanks!
Yes, cutting a hole is involved, and then there will be several bolt holes in the front right of the bed floor,
in the flat non-ribbed section of the floor and a couple of holes a few ribs in...here is a drawing and measurement
of the bed hole and a few photos...disregard the hole above it...needed some sheet metal to patch the dash!
More fotos in the next post...
Best,
Jason
As you can see, there are holes (should be there in your toolbox) which will then be needed to be drilled in your bed to match...there is a bracket that
installs in the short "L" section of the toolbox, and you can see those holes drilled in the bed. I'm not sure if these are factory/dealer correct, but that's
how mine was done. As you can see by the lines on the top of my toolbox, it snugs up to the cross members in the bed. If you don't have the L bracket
that I'm holding, you could easily fabricate one. So many of these were installed after by the owners or dealerships, I'm guessing it was differently by
many mechanics. Personally, I think it could be done better than my old bed was....I'd try and fab brackets to avoid drilling holes in the bed. The bottom
pic shows the two holes drilled to match to the "L" bracket I'm holding in photos 2&3. The L has 2 nut-plates, for the bed floor bolts and then the back of
the toolbox L area has a bolt hole to mount it.
Thanks for the info! It'll be a while before I'm installing it, But I wanted to gather all the parts I need so when I DO put it in, I'll be ready. I've got a lot of other body work to do before then. There was a NASTY crease in the side of the bed right where the box goes- And I've always liked the way the boxes look, so I figured 'What the heck'...
ND- Thanks. I'll have to look to see if I can find a copy of the diagram. On a related note, The gasket disintegrated when I took it off. I don't suppose any of the parts suppliers you have access to have any left?
Scooterdude (FTE member Old Harley) has the parts catalog, can scan and post pics from it.
There are several other members that have it, can do the same thing.
Or, you can buy a CD copy of the catalog from hipoparts.com for about 22 bucks.
No one has the mounting gasket (C5TZ-9946118-A) between the tool compartment and the bedside.
No one has the gasket between the door and tool compartment (C4TZ-9946102-A). No one has any other NOS parts for it.
If you see any parts on ebay, be aware that there are TWO different 1964/66 tool compartments (Short/long beds), another for 1967/72, and still another for 1973/79.
Thanks. I figured it would be tough to find, but I think I'll be able to find something close enough to work.
I bought a perfect fit gasket at B&D Company in Denver, Co. They sold me a 1/2 inch seal that has a piece on the back that grips the edge of the box. You have to take the metal holding pieces off and leave them off.
I've used something similar on my boat, but it had slipped my mind that the stuff was around. You jarred my memory- It's Called Trim-Lok. There is a bunch of it on E-Bay, I'll have to go find the correct size.
Thanks for the info... I went ahead and ordered a copy of the manual, since there have been several times in the past that it would have been really handy, and I'm sure there will be PLENTY more times in the future!
I've wanted the tool box since I first saw one- I think it's a cool add-on! I'm going for a kind of "off the farm" look for my truck, and I think this will add to that.
I should be starting tearing it down next week, once the boat restoration that I'm finishing up clears out of the shop... This is the first time I've done a land vehicle, so it should be interesting. I'm sure I'll be posting a LOT of questions in the near future!
My locking mechanism was broken, and rusted pretty badly. I found a stainless one that fits pretty well-
It only requires a TINY modification to the box door- About 1/8" needs to be trimmed from the bottom of the opening, and the flange behind it (on the back of the door) has to be cut, but nothing major, it took about 5 minutes. I may trim a bit off the top and the bottom of the latch, so it fits in the recess a bit better. I'll have to drill 4 new holes to mount it, too. The studs that held the old one on snapped right off when I went to remove it!
Besides, this one is stainless, so it should last a while
