I recently bought a 93 ranger 4.0l 4x4 with 135k miles.
I drove it home an hour nd a half with no problems other then a very small miss high end witch i thought a tune up would fix. Next day i chance plugs and wires and take a short ride. As im pulling up to my house antifreeze starts pouring out of the over flow...
Now we figure head gasket and that it was blown pre the purchase of the truck because two of the old pligs were so bad they werent firing.
No water in the oil but radiator bubbles i think and theres moisture ajd smoke from exhaust .
Now im at a cross roads, it it worth spending the money to do a head gasket with this type of mileage or just buy a new engine? And examples.of similer sotuations ?
Dont understand "radiator bubble, no water"? Did you fill plumb full start and see bublbes comming out as a result of a gasket leak or was this due to pouring in water when hot? 135K on it its a call for you. A reman engine sells at autozone for around $2000 I think. Are you doing or having the work done is the next question. I have 310000 on my 94. No engine problems, have R&Rd the water pump, radiator about 150000 ago. My problems have mainly been with the transmission, clutch, hydralics. So do you reman the engine or do yourself, is all your call and on how its to be done, yourself or others. If someone does add in the labor costs plus while its out plan to have the trans looked at, new clutch and hydralics, ujoints etc. The trans will run about $1000 for a basic R&R, clutch and hydralics at autozone with "lifetime" parts will be around $350 now, U joints another $100 or so (P&L install of the u joints). So what is it worth to you.
I will if I decide to go the R&R route will do all the above rather than pay another $20000+ for a replacement vehicle. Its easier to fund the $4000 or so.
