351w rebuild on a budget

So today while over at my brothers he decided that he was just going to rebuild his 351w instead of just using this short block his one friend gave him. So my questions are actually for him. What are some ways to rebuild it? Such as cams for the SD and things to make it reliable......(he has a terrible problem with his right foot....lol) He just had a set of heads rebuild to. . Hes also looking for a little more horsepower as close to 300 hp as possible but honestly i think reliability is more important at this point. Also would doing a maf conversion be worth the money right now. Any opinions would be helpful.

From what little I know of SD EFI systems I'd say 300 horse is a very lofty goal.

For example I just rebuilt a '94 full roller for my '68 Bronco project (still in pieces).
F4TE block, stock bore, crank, rods, pistons, Comp 35-308-8 5.0L roller cam, Edelbrock RPM alum heads w/ 2.02/1.60 valves, Scorpion 1.6 ratio full roller rockers, GT40 fuel injection manifolds, 65mm throttle body, 24# injectors, Mustang MAF system with A9L computer. My machinist said I might see 300hp as I asked from curiosity by HP is not my goal (TORQUE baby!)

I'd say the best thing on the pocket book would be to build it as close as you can get to stock specs and be happy with what it gives you.

I also just rebuilt a 5.0 on my back porch with next to nothing as I blew my wad on the 5.8 build. Stock bottom end (pulled it apart and did a quicky hone job just to clean it up myself) with new main & rod bearings & new rings. New gaskets and rebuilt the 19# injectors myself. $200-$300 in parts and some elbow grease and I've got a real nice EFI'd 5.0 waiting to go in my '69 Bronco. Already had a topend off a '97 exploder for it (GT40 heads and intakes).

The trucks a 93 f150 4x4 it has a e4od but he is gonna swap to the c6
I thought 300hp on sd was a little up there too. He thought about doing a mass air conversion too but didnt figure it was worth it just yet.

The heads and intake are the limiting factor with the stock truck setup, the SD EFI system will support 300+ hp if the motor can breath well enough.

If that motor doesn't make 350-400hp at the crank you seriously messed something up. Of course that could work out to only 300hp on the ground after factoring in losses through the transmission, axle gearing, and tires.. given how a truck is typically setup with big assed tires and a power hungry automatic transmission.

That's kindof what I was thinking too but am new to building engines.

It is gonna be rollin' on some big meats (39.5s) but I should get a good amount of it to the ground with an NP-435, 203/205 doubler and 4.88 gears w/ Detroits front and rear.

I wish I had a flow meter.
i home ported my stock E7s, and my tuner was surprised how much of a difference it made.
i wish I could compare my E7s with gt40s.

unless they were under $100, your probably going to take them to a shop anyways to get them checked out.

why are they selling them? So cheap(relatively).
