I'd like to get a shotgun, I have experience shooting them (mostly pumps) but haven't ever owned one (I do own a rifle and handguns). I have read good things about the Saiga, though I've also read that its best to modify the gas system for serious hardcore use (like with the drum clips). I mostly just want a gun to target shoot with and keep at the house for home defense, though I may take it hunting for small game. I'd probably do the pistol grip AK style stock if I went with it. Just seems like a cool and very capable gun.
If you just want a shotgun for home defense and target shooting why not go with a Mossberg or Remington? I have a Mossberg 500 that I used for home defense, but I go out and just shoot with it every now and then. Plus, you can get one for around $300 new and even less used. I don't know a whole lot about the Saigas, but I can't imagine they would be cheap, although I know they would be fun to shoot.
Mostly its just the novelty of it being fed by a clip with the semi auto, and have the drum rounds available if I ever feel like getting stupid. Plus i think they look awesome. they aren't as expensive as you might think.. I've seen them for as low as $540 or so brand new.
Darn you Old93junk and your Kalashnikov royalties!
The Saiga-12 is a good platform but beware if what you are attracted to is the possibility of a drum magazine, the cost of drums can be pretty high. But if you go that route, check out the Wraithmaker drum.
that is a nice looking mossberg... I still think I might try the saiga if I find myself with some extra money. if I find a used one nearby I'm probably gonna jump on it!
I really like my Mossberg 835 turkey special. it shoots from 3.5 to 2&3/4 shells. Its tough & easy to tote. The camo coating on it is very good. I've had it for years & its never scratched. It is a great gun for the $300 I paid for it
A shotgun based on the AK platform?.............It will still be shooting when all those fancy shotguns have crumbled to dust!
I kinda wonder about that. The nuances of making an AK work with a 3/4' X 3" cylinder compared to a 5/16 X 2-1/4" tapered round aint as simple as scaling up I'm sure. Time should tell.
A friend of mine had an older Itallian made pump (the name eludes me at the moment... Valco, Vector, somethin') that used 8 round detatchable stack magazines. That thing was a HOOT!
Here is a Russian auto. The Baikal MP 153. It reviewed well in American Hunter mag in the 12/11 issue. It shoots from 2&3/4 to 3&1/2 shells. It uses a adjustable gas system to change from light to heavy loads. It retails for $417 in black
