glow plug fail

Hi guys: I've got an '83 F250 with the 6.9 IDI engine. My son redid the heads last fall and installed new glow plugs. The truck is used infrequently and as the glow plug controller wasn't working, we used a jumper wire across the terminals of the solenoid to cycle the plugs for a short time. Now the plugs (Motorcraft) have failed and I will be replacing them. I would like to know if we caused the plugs to fail by what we did? I've read that they are 6 volt plugs and we sent 12 volts to them by jumping the solenoid.

Thanks

Todd

How long did you jump the solenoid for?

they are designed to receive full power for just long enough to warm up. with all 8 plugs working, thats about 10 seconds. when less plugs are working, that time is reduced because all the small wire in the circuit can better handle the load and thus provides a higher voltage to the plug, making them heat faster. this is why it often happens that when one plug fails, the others often follow it quickly

as for your jumping it, time is the big thing, too long will toast them

welcome to FTE. both the ZD-1 spade terminal and the ZD-9 bullet terminal glow plugs are 12 volt glow plugs, so don't worry about putting battery voltage to them. the problem is putting that power to them for any length of time.

thanks

Thanks for the replies. When we jumped the solenoid we slowly counted to 8, then either started with the key or just had the key turned on and when ready jumped the starter solenoid.

I guess I'll get to see how they come out today.

Glow plugs came out easily and went back in fine, cycle by hand because my controller didn't come yet, and she RUNS!

Thanks for your help.

motorcraft are the only way to go, either zd1 or zd9 depending on your year

glow plug controller win!

An update for you guys that are following: My controller (Delphi) arrived today and I installed it. It worked as it should, my glow plugs cycled on and then off. But my WTS light is not working as it was previously. Will trouble shoot that next.
