i have noticed smoke for 3 min almost every comute. i started checking the display sceen on the dash, in system setup scroll mode all checks out well and the last thing on screen says cleaning exhaust filter. it stays on fopr 3 seconds then the screen defaults to my view. i have checked this 3 times yesterday and 5 times this am during a 55 mile commute. is it stuck in regen or is this normal to be on the screen??
my truck was having lots of regen cycles after the latest ford flash and the truck spit out lots of smoke. At my ford senior master technicians recomendation I tunned with a h@s xrt pro and did a dpf/cat delete and hooked up to my TT and went to florida for 10days. the results=4mpg better towing no regen lots more power on the stock power mode and the truck never ran this good even when I bought it new. I am very happy with it and should have done it sooner.08 6.4 f250 psd
You could try a couple of things. First would be to sensor the sensors fore and aft of the DPF. Make sure all looks good. I'd say take them out and have a look but they will probably break.
Leads me to the next suggestion. Replacing the rear one and see what that does.
There maybe other causes as well. So with 72K being on the clock you will likely have to pay at least a diagnostic fee if you take it in but it may prove to be a covered item and then you would not.
Don't forget the DPF on 2008's is covered to the 100K mark just like the motor.
You are not the only one. Mine did this starting in October last year. I took it into dealer and no fee and they decided normal.
It is time you go to corporate ladder and not the 800 number in the manual. Complain and maybe a field engineer will look at it rather than a service tech from a ford dealer.
You could also say the hell to 28k miles and tune and delete
If you're in stop-and-go <35mph traffic, regen will take forever to complete and drain your fuel while it's doing it. Cold weather makes things worse. That's the one thing about this truck that annoys me to no end. Mine will belch smoke for about a minute once I start moving if the exhaust cooled down while idling in regen. Very repeatable. And very normal according to the dealer.
If you have a chance, take her out on a long freeway run when it's in regen. Constant throttle = constant heat is the key for regens.
It might be worth checking the DPF pressure sensor attached on the topmost bolt of the DPF. However, I wouldn't know what to look for though--the PCM checks the sensor's readings for valid levels before and about 10sec after the truck is started as one of its 'rationality' tests. It would throw a code if anything was unreasonable.
