Hello Everyone,
I've got an '08 that I bought certified used 7 months ago with 65k miles on it. Ive put 11k on it since the purchase and so far I've spent 1200.00 on a new rad and yesterday the motor may have gone south. Upon acceleration it began to skip badly. The engine light came on an it lost power. I pulled over, switched it off and restarted. It idled fine put would not accelerate. Waited a few minutes and it seemed to run better. Drove 2 miles back home and called my mechanic brother in law. After checking it with his scanner, it threw off a couple or egr codes but his bigger concern was a rattling deep within. He seems to think it may be a rocker arm, valve spring or connecting rod. Regardless - something major. My question is this - With 76k on the truck this - will this be a repair under warranty because it doesnt sound cheap.
2130 hours on engine. Live in the country. Driven 50 miles round trip to work daily. I don't let it idle a lot. Would an egr valve sticking cause the rattling noise? Thanks for your help
So would that mean an egr valve replacement? I've read horror stories on here about ford voiding warranties because of lack of maintenance. I've done proper maintenance since I've had the truck but who knows about the previous owner? I purchased it from a ford dealer (not the one doing I'll be taking it to) so I would assume they would stand behind it regardless of what it is. However the rad replacement was out of my pocket. Apparently not part of the power train. Any thoughts?
those codes...you are getting a new EGR valve. New one has deleted the coolant line to it so it should perform better. It is part of the motor and emissions so it is covered no doubt.
He did apparently did clear the codes. I drove it in this morning. It made the 30 mile trip and ran great. The tech checked it out from top to bottom and it showed nothing. All checked out fine. They said it could have been carbon or some other particulate that caused the egr valve to stick and send the truck into "limp mode" (whatever that is) and cause the egr codes to appear. Once whatever it was passed thru the valve began to work and because I turned the truck off - the computer reset the "limp mode". Regardless all checked out and I'm assuming theyre diagnostics would indicate anything internal as well. It was about 1000 miles away from the next service -- so while they had it I got them to service it and change the fuel filters. They said just to drive it - so we'll see.
