Recently I removed my grill to hose out the radiator and after installing it back and getting up to highway speed I had this BAD whistle coming from what I thought was the windshield. I took it to a local window replacer and he fixed two loose pieces but the whistle was still there. So I got out the Duct tape and went all the way around the windshield, cab lights and side mirrors. But i would still get the whistle.
Then out of desperation I put a piece of tape across the joint of where the hood and grill meet and the whistle was gone! Only problem now is I cant figure out how to stop the whistle without the tape. Ive adjusted the hood and the grill but no joy. I'll update when I find a fix.
EDIT: the whistle sounded like a person just constantly whistling. It changed with wind direction or when a truck passed me....
Cause and Effect: Taking the grill off caused a whistle, then inspect what you changed. The grill has about 3/4 in adjustment when remounting the top four screws. Most likely, you widened (causing a gap) or shortened (causing the hood to sit higher). I would look at the marks on the top four bolts and inspect them to make sure they are positioned where they were prior to the grill removal. Think about it, a gap on a bottle when you blow air across creates a great whistle. The narrower the gap, the higher the frequency.
I mounted the grill back in the same spot it was, but you are right about cause and effect! Something I did changed something. I just need to fill in the blanks.
UPDATE: Adjusted hood all the way up. No go. Adjusted all the way down. NO GO. Put a piece of tape across the rear of the hood. NO GO. Then went back to the tape on the front and it quit again. My test tomorrow is to move the grill within the slots, I did not have a 10MM wrench with me today.
I wonder if a wire or something else that could have moved when you pulled the grill? This may change the air flow enough to generate the whistle.
Looking at my power cord for the engine block heater leaves me wondering about all different kinds of ways air could pass through these openings and make noise with the simplest of change.
I have heard a high pitch whistle driving in this windy azz state at certain times. It seems to be coming from the passenger pillar/mirror area when the wind is hitting it head on. Vary strange. HPFP? <----I kid, I kid.
any updates on this whistle noise? i have a 09 supercab lariat, chrome package, 5.4 that just started this last week. around 65-70mph kinda like a short whistle/flutter. uggg
