Since this is about mirrors I thought I would ask my question as well. I tried to replace my passenger mirror with one from the junkyard. I say "tried to" because the one screw on the bottom brace would just spin so I twisted it a bit to get more torque on it but the whole thing came out leaving a hole in my door. The second thing was, when I mounted the JY mirror I tried to move it into position and it broke inside. Note to others: check the movement of the mirrors at the JY. Anyway, now I don't have a mirror on the passenger side. Would it be possible to take a piece of aluminum or iron and tap it for the size of the screws and put it inside the door? I still have the plastic "gaskets" that go under the mounting brackets. I'll caulk it as well to keep water out of the inside of the door.
i have the old-fashioned little sport mirrors on my 82 and they are totally worn out. i like that option you chose and i hope they can go on without too much wrangling.
If you look at mine, I just put the lower screws back in the holes. I cut the brace off the mirror bracket that runs through the door. I also used license plate mounts in the door to attach the mirrors to the door. They have been on there a couple of years and there is no splitting of the sheetmetal. I do get some vibration, but not as bad as the western style were.
If you want more stability. cut the hole for the bracket to pass through and mount behind the door panel. I am happy with mine just mounted to the door. before you mount them, make sure that your wing window will clear the mirror.
