Camshaft position sensor.
Camshaft position sensor.
I just recently bought a 2000 Ranger with the 3.0 in it. The truck has a noticeable miss at idle and the check engine light comes on every now and then. Pulled the code and it said the camshaft position sensor is faulty. Turns out, this part had just been replaced before I bought it but I was told you have to index it and make adjustments before you install it. I'm assuming the previous owner didn't do this. I'd like to know how to index this sensor. Any help is appreciated.
The cam sensor is not indexed. It bolts directly onto the syncronizer shaft. The Shaft is certainly indexed. You have to put the engine on top dead center on the compression stroke for the #1 piston first. The it takes a tool that cost mechanics a fortune that some parts stores are including a cheap plastic one with the shaft now. The top of the tool when set into position should be around the 11 o'clock position tighten it down and install the cam sensor back on it. This is not something you want to try if you have no mechanical ability. Best thing is to buy a haynes manual. They have a decent direction on it.
