It's a '02 F-150 4.2. The replacement seems pretty straight forward but I wasn't sure if there were any pitfalls to the diagnostics. Will replacing the valve and then disconnecting and then reconnecting the battery reset the service engine light?
Looks like your dealer is right, unless your truck is certified for sale in CA and it's registered in CA, ME, MA, NY, or VT. Then you get 3 yrs/50,000 miles.
I'll let you know what my diagnosis turns out to be. I noticed some part-throttle surging (mostly 2nd and 3rd gear) today that I don't think was there before.
Nope. Got things fixed on Thursday. It was a bad "DPFE Sensor", which apparently senses backpressure in the exhaust system before the cats. They told me it's in the engine compartment. Apparently it's not unusual for these to go, and the replacement part is a newer design. Probably would have cost about $200 to replace if I wasn't still under warranty.
Do a Google search on DPFE Sensor and you'll find a lot of info, such as:
I also had complained that sometimes I was having a hard time getting the truck into first. Dealer agreed, and gave me a new clutch master cylinder. They also fixed a drivers side door rattle.
Overall, I'm pretty pleased with this dealer's service (Stoneham Ford in Stoneham, MA).
Replaced the EGR valve yesterday. Very simple and easy installation with only a few hoses which need to be shifted to get to the nuts holding the valve in place. Used a 1 1/16" wrench and a 10mm socket. Disconnected the battery and reconnected it and after finally finding the remote control for shutting off the alarm (scared me to death in an enclosed garage) the "Service Engine" light did not stay lit. Good to go.
Mark,
I had a 2001 F-150 (same color and everything that I have now) which my daughter totaled last year that had the same clutch problem. My neighbor has a 2002 with the same problem and now mine is starting to develop the same. I'm starting to see a pattern here.
Tom, thanks for the note on the clutch. The replacement master cylinder is better, but still not perfect.
I need to get under the dash and take a close look. I used to have a 1986 F150. When that clutch master failed, I replaced it myself. The original was not adjustable. The replacment (bought from the dealer) had a rod that could be adjusted for length to allow for clutch wear. I'm thinking the replacement I just got is the same, and maybe a turn of the rod will help.
On the 1986, I used to have to rotate the rod a turn or two each year.
I hope I am in the right place, I want to discuss the EGR issue with a 4.2, I do believe I have a major problem yet no codes. I have a major buck around 80km when I have just decelerated, then slowly accelerated again. It is said that there is no way to test the DPFE. Is that in fact true? I am not interested in spending $ that may be not necessary. Once again, I have no codes present and I used a Snap-On scanner. The timing had gone to 16383 advanced once or more times?? I am getting confused, Please help.
Thanks, David
Yes, you are in the right place! Welcome To FTE first of all! Secondly, be sure you ask this question in the performance, technical forum as well. I'm not sure about not being able to test the DPFE, but I'd just ask a local mechanic if it's possible.
