I wrecked my truck recently placing a hard lick on the drivers side wheel. After replacing the hub, the truk is driving fine except, The steering wheel is out of alignment ( about 180 deg.) & the wheels turn one way much further than the other.
I don't see evidence of any bent components. I was wondering if it were possible that gearing inside the steering gearbox had slipped?
Any ideas on what has happened or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.
I cant think of anything that could "slip". Normally the first thing to do is get on flat surface, set in the seat and turn the wheel so it is "centered" and straight. Wiggle it a few degrees each way and leave it setting with the steering wheel centered. Now get out and look at each front wheel. SEt a few feet infront of each tire and sight down the outer edge to the back tire. Determine if both tires are not pointing "forward" or if it is only one side... I also set a milk crate outside each front tire and laly a 2 x 4 about 4 ft long ontop and push up against the tire (pointed front to back). Have a buddy on the opposite side. Stick a 12 ft ruler behind the tire and infront of the tire (alternately) and measure between the 2 x 4... front should be about 1/8 inch narrower than behind the tire. That is called "tow in". YOu can adjust the tie rods to get one wheel to move in or out, or both to move to get the tires pointed straight with respect to the steering wheel, and get the right toe - in.
A trip to the local alignment shop is in order. They can adjust what needs to be adjusted and tell you if anything needs replacement. You can do that part yourself or just let them do the whole thing.
"the wheels turn one way much further than the other."-------
i did not see that the first time.. makes me wonder if you bent the arm on the steering box. I would still do the above and check things out, or you can have someone do that for you.
I had the exact same problem on a 98 F150 2wd I just bought. I noticed that the spline shaftthat the pitman arm slides over on the steering box was Twisted So I replaced the steering box and it steers great in both directions. I also replaced both upper control arms with new balljoints and new lower balljoints it now drives like new again. I hope this helps and good luck.
