Been trying to track down some MPG issues for a long time. Today I hooked up my AE tool and ran through all the tests. Cylinder Contribution Test showed #2 and #8 faults. Ran the test about 10 times. Sometimes both faulted sometimes just 2 or 8. Thought that sucks but at least they are under the same side.
Ran the KOEO test and got a IDM fault. I have the early 99 and swapped out the IDM with a factory unit from a newer truck to get the higher voltage. Could this be the cause of the IDM fault or is there something wrong with it? If it is the IDM I guess that could be affecting the contribution tests so I wouldn't have to dig into that again.
Usually a sigh of the IDM going bad.. It will get more noticably rough idle wise over time. My dad's truck is doing this. I am gonna try one of Swamps modded IDMs. Robert6401 has one and loves his.
don't get your IDM from Computer Exchange on EBAY.. mine went out a few years ago.. I ordered one from them.. took about 12 swaps from them to get one that worked..
The extra $125 is basically a core charge. They are hard to find now a days.
you have to repair the injector faults first because that automatically triggers the idm fault, most likely bad injector solenoids, then after repaired erase codes and see if it comes back, i dont think it will.

i would take the two injectors showing faults out and swap with the good ones and run the test again then if the same two holes show the faults its not an injector issue, but they are also known for the injector harness failures, Injectors 2 and 8 are not hard to get to.
usually just the valve cover gasket, i had the same issue with my 99 f350 and found out it was just the injector solenoids, i replaced them and erased codes and its been good for two years now. i would swap the solenoids in that bank and check again just to be completely sure that its not there, before spending money for the IDM, when the solenoids start to go bad they show up intermitently and that triggers the IDM codes
The IDM will be an upgrade anyway, so I am going to drop that in and recheck. If I still have the contribution failures then I will swap 2 and 4 and 6 and 8 and see if it sticks with the holes or the injectors. If its the injectors then I know what needs to be done. If its the holes I am going to hope its the harness, am not looking to repair the motor. Should not need to replace the motor twice in 160k.
