Of the many years that I have suffered from migraines, today was, by far, the worst ever. I couldn't walk, I tried to get to work, but smacked my pickup mirror on the garage while trying to back out. I stumbled back in and called in sick to work.
I'm on medication for migraines and am doing good. Today was the first migraine in about four weeks. I used to get migraines 4 or 5 days a week.
Just wondering if there are other migraine sufferers out there. What do you do to control them? I take imitrex if I can get to it soon enough, but I usually have to let them wear themselves off.
Needless to say, I'm still hurting and I'm sure tomorrow isn't going to be all that fun.
I have suffered with migraines for more 15 years.
For the last 10 I've had them pretty much under control. I watched my diet and found the foods & drinks that are triggers. After finding them I tried to eliminate (or limit) them from my diet. Along with watching my diet I have been taking Inderal daily.
Before taking Inderal and just avoiding the triggers I would still get a migraine about once a week. After the doc put me on Inderal it dropped to about one every other month sometimes longer depending on what I eat. I just had one a couple days ago and I was shaking and my hand was twitching. It was the worst one I ever had.
Coffee does work to an extent. Caffeine is a vasodilator, but also is a trigger for most migraine sufferers. In limited amounts caffeine does help to relive a migraine, but also causes a rebound effect.
Caffeine, a lot of the time makes the migraine last longer.
My stepson takes inderol three times a day and theat has really cut down on his migrains. When one does come on he takes Zomig. That usually takes care of it.
I used to get migraine headaches pretty regularly when I was younger, but they've lessened in the last few years. Once in awhile I still get a doozy, though, and it tends to strike with little warning, meaning there's not a bunch I can do to prevent it.
Coffee does help me, or a Coke at room temperture will do in a pinch. I take Excedrin Migraine tablets, then a hot shower and a nap in a dark room and that usually chases them.
My wife suffers from migraines and I see how terrible it is. It would be devastating for me as I can't just pull over and ride it out. She tends to get them because of the stress related to her job. I think it is the amount of coffee she consumes. And when the coffee is gone the diet Coke starts up. Seems like an overload of caffine. This is why I'm not in the medical field.
Have you ever had an MRI done? I was diagnosed with a Chiari Malformation in 2000 (Sr. year in High School) after I was getting migraines every day, blacking out, and the left side of my body was going numb.
The chiari is the hole in the base of your skull where your brain pokes through - in my situation, my brain was too large and the opening too small - put pressure on my spinal cord. They went in there, cut a few things up, and I was back in business. I now have a 5" vertical scar on the back of my neck, but it makes me look tough
The funny part is, the doctors told my parents that it wasn't genetic - never been historically documented, etc. Turns out that my 3 siblings (23, 17, and 16 years old) all have it! So far they've fixed my 2 younger siblings and my older brother needs it, but he refuses to go.
Anyhow, bottom line is - make sure there isn't some underlying problem there. They had me on imitrex for a few months - that stuff is no fun at all.
