Did the soot trucks get worse mileage in your experience!
My 08 tips were clean up until 18K miles; no change in mileage or regen frequency; regen about once a tank. Complained once to dealer and told normal; never pushed it as I figured something else going on. I really think it was coolant leaking from old style EGR valve. The 08 had 100K warranty on DPF; then IIRC Ford changed that in 09......
If I had kept the truck I would have pushed the issue before my 5 years had been up in Oct this year.
Funny this topic has come up - I look at every set of tips I come across too I've seen some 6.4's with buildup on the tips, but haven't seen any 6.7's yet. I was going over to mention that to a guy in a 6.4 at the fuel station one day and he jumped in his truck and took off before I got over there... Oh well. It was a work truck so who knows how well it had been taken care of either.
My 6.4 with 64k has clean tips though regens are not as predictable as they were a year ago with the same driving. I am currently in the market for a 6.7 so these type threads are interesting/informative. Pipes still clean on 6.7's I see on the road.
I took this picture of an 2011 F-150 Ecoboost last week at work.
I guess the EPA needs to find a way to clean up gasoline vehicles so they can have shiny tips, too. (Wait, did I just give them another idea?)
DPF keeps the soot from forming post DPF. The 6.4 DPFs seemed to form cracks over time which would cause some soot to pass the DPF.
Gas engines do not have a DPF. The ecoboost is known (pickuptrucks.com even noticed this) to produce more soot. My guess is they are running a tad rich under high load in order to keep cylinder temperatures down and to provide enough enthalpy to the turbos to keep them providing boost.
This is probably why many ecoboost owners will say its a V6 that produces V8 power with V8 fuel economy....
