I have search and I'm confused my 96 f150 5.0 has a code p0443 (evaporative emission system purge control valve circuit). it came on at operating temps goin down the road, reset it today, drove ten miles, sat for awhile, a mild cold start and it came right back on. Reset nothing yet. Did reasearch, but all I could find was when the code could not be reset without it imideatly coming back on, and it being accompanyed by a P0713 code. What does it sound like to you guys? Sounds like a vapor canister purge valve to me. But I read somthing about a faulty pcm.
The PCM will only try to open the purge valve with the engine at operating temperature and at mid throttle. Maybe bad plug or open wire going to the solenoid on the purge valve.
The red wire (#361) should have battery voltage on it and the light green wire with a black stripe (#191) is the wire the PCM grounds to turn on the solenoid.
KOEO = Key On Engine OFF
KOER = Key On Engine Running
Just unplug the solenoid and check resistance between the two pins of the solenoid.
If you have continuity the solenoid should be good (under 100 ohms).
The red wire should have battery voltage on it with the key on.
You will have no way to test the green/black wire unless you unplug the PCM and test it from pin #56 of the PCM plug.
The resistance above was for using a BOB (Break Out Box).
Just checking to make sure the OP is getting the correct info. All the references to "purge solenoid" had me a little concerned.
Even the wiring diagram above was from the 96 manual.
I can only go by the manual as I have no personal knowledge of this system on a 1996 OBD-II 4.9L Truck.
I have looked through several different Ford manuals for this error code a few times before. It's a little murky for sure. That is why I posted the photos of the two different style devices. Hopefully the OP can reply back with what version they have on their truck.
