Need Help in Identification
I was assuming it was a 400 for awhile, but now that it's time to tune this sucker and do routine maintainance, I find myself unsure.
I ripped off the the starter tonight, and the only casting number I was able to see was "D7TE 2 A 3" (certain about the first part, but the order of the last three might be reversed.. left the paper i had it written down on in the shop)
All that i can glisten from that is that it's a 77 Truck engine.

Is there a definite way I can identify this engine? Neither the dome tag or emissions decal on the valve cover are there anymore. I hear that the harmonic balancers were different between the two.. can anyone shed some light on this?

I'll check the dampener thickness, and also try to track down the second owner..
thanks for your insight!

Try this 1st.
Use the timing marks for reference and turn the crank to TDC by hand, remove the #1 spark plug. Get a stiff wire like a piece from a coat hanger. Put it straight down until it touches the piston. Mark the wire length next to a reference point like the valve cover.
A 2nd person could make the part easier. Turn the crank slowly and let the wire follow the piston to the bottom of the stroke. When the wire stops moving down, stop turning the crank. Mark the wire against the same reference point you used before. Measure the distance between the marks and that is your stroke. The measurement may not be exact, but it should be easy to tell if the stroke is 3.5 or 4".
If you're by yourself, put a mark at the bottom of a pulley, turn the crank until the mark reaches the top, as close as you can get to 180 deg. Put the wire through the hole again, mark and measure the same way as before.
Clear as Mud?

Try this page for an indirect link

Under scrutiny, it's evident for me that the head casting numbers wont help me either, unless I happen to have a 400 built before 1975... that doesnt seem to be the case.
The block number would have to be D5AZ or earlier...
strange combinations find away to occur however, I tracked down the number of the second owner of the truck however, and I shall find out all soon.
