running boards???

Is there any big difference between the smooth style and the original style boards?
I think I would like to have the smooth style type but I'm not sure, Only thing I could imagine being a downfall of the smooth ones would be scratches???

And more prone to slipping off when the board is wet or greasy.

I got the ribbed boards because they looked more original. The smooth ones look good on a highly modified truck but if your truck will be a restomod then I'd stick with the ribbed boards....

What are you going to do with the truck? Do you have any small kids that will climb on them? Running boards are an open invitation to small kids to climb up so that can see in the bed. So whether at a show or at home, beware the smooth RBs. If there are going to be little kids having access to your truck, then the ribbed RBs with the attached decorative strips is the way to go. They are real paint savers! Jag

Thanks guys thats just what I was needing to hear. Think I will be going with the original style. Even though my truck will be highly modified I do have two kids, a five year old and a one year old.

I have noticed 8.8 show up around here about once a week on craigslist. One will show up for you soon.

Have you seen the thread of the 49 laying boards just posted?......good thread! seams like it was slow around here for the last week or so then today there are about four new people with good builds.

I picked up an Explorer rear end with disc brakes and sway bar at pick and pull for about $200 a couple weeks ago. I called around different yards and they go for about $300 or more at other yards. But, they are readily available.

The Explorer is an 8.8 and is the correct width. Mine was a '96 with disc brakes. There were a couple of '95's that had drum brakes. You will need to relocate the spring perches and fab sway bar and upper shock mounts.

Hey Adam,
I'd vote for ribbed running boards - coated mine with a bedliner type material to make it even less slippery & I didn't want to worry about paint.
I think $300 is a bit steep for an 8.8. We used one for our 1950 F1 - it came from a 2001 Explorer with 3.73 gears & nice disc brakes ($125).

It's not totally plug & play as mentioned above by Ike you have to relocate a few things like the shock mounts & spring perches. A few other things to note - it will change your lug pattern so you will need new wheels & you will probably want to match them up front so you can carry just one spare. Also we found "the rake" to be a little too high with our mustang II front end so we had the Explorer springs flipped to lower it a little. Our 1950 F1 originally came with like 8 springs in the stock format - the 8.8 from the Explorer comes with a 3 spring set up - not sure it can carry the same load out back if that matters to you.

Pics of our running boards below with bedliner & a pic of the 8.8 rear axle.
It doesn't look like much but it cleans up just fine. We also picked up the emergency brake off the Explorer as well.

Good luck over there.

Ben in Austin
