Are you trying to remove bed or whole box . At any rate crawl under and look at frame
they will be fairly obvious .There are no stupid questions , but some answers can be mind boggling .

Thanks, will have to wait for the rain to dry up a bit but with all the wind today I can probably do that tomorrow.

I take it the tank is not in the stock location or else you wouldn't have to remover the bed. In the stock bed, or box, you see I think six bolts with square internal square heads. There's also two, I think, in the metal that runs under the tailgate.

It's been a while since I replaced my bed. The truck is in storage right now so I can't get to it.

I am also going to replace the transmission, the axles and the tires so I do need to take it off.

It probably make it easier to work on the axles if the box was removed. It really depends on how far you want to go. Are you planning to paint the frame or just swap out the rear axle and drive it as is? If you're just swapping out the axle I would leave the box on.

Replacing the transmission would be easiest if you removed the cab but again, if you're just doing a swap you should be able to the work with the cab in place but I would strongly suggest you pull out the seat. You can pull the transmission through the opening in the floor but the seat will be in the way. I pulled the transmission out of my F-1 panel fairly easy just by lifting it myself through the floor but the F-2 trans is a bigger, heavier beast and you'll need assistance to lift it out. If you can use a engine cherry picker and some one to help you should be OK.

I scanned through your previous posts without reading through them, just read the titles. Are you installing a tank in between the frame rails? If you are then removing the box would be the best option.

If you are, why? You seem to have enough work to get the old truck on the road. The cab gas tank, IMO, is the safest place to have the tank. It's up high, it's protected and as long as the the sending unit gasket is in good condition and not allowing fumes in the cab it should be OK. I have never heard any stories about tanks blowing up. Ford had the tanks in the cab up to, I think, 1973-4 without problem that I know of.

My old truck has no seat left. Don't know what the guy was sitting on but it's gone. He also had a garden hose hooked to the carb with a gas can in the cab. Lovely.
