Im soon to start a testoration of a 79 f150 short bed. im going from a styleside to a stepside bed. My question is there anything else i would need besides the subrail and crossmembers to attach it to the bed? I dont think so, but im not 100% sure.
Those flareside beds didn't change all that much from 1948 to 1987, except for the fenders and small pieces. Fitting a fuel tank under it should not be the problem. Just the filler neck on the bed to the tank.
Let me clarify what I meant. If your truck has a cab mounted gas tank it should be no problem. If the bed you are getting if from a truck with a cab mounted tank and you have a frame (under the bed) mounted tank you may have to do some modification.
We had to do a little bit of modification on my 76 when we attached the 55 long step side to it. Some of the holes may also not line up if they are from different years but that is a simple thing to fix.
I just went from a step side to style side. The filler neck is different.
I have the rear mounted tank and had no issues fitting either hose from either bed to the tank. Everything bolts up exactly the same. All the holes are in the same location. You can get just about every piece you need for the step side (flair side) i know someone will chastise me for that at some point. Except the support rails that run from under the bed that the mounting bolts run through. you'll have to go to a steel yard and pick up some rectangular tubing in the proper diameter.
