So i bought a 1999 V10 8 for 6k from a used car lot with a loan 8 days ago went to change the oil and notice that a piece of the block was broken. I then took it to a mechanic and they said is was broke on both sides and that 3 bolts of the 6 (2 top and 1 side) were holding the tranny on. I had a mechanic look at it before i bought it and they didn't notice the issue then. The parts are rusted and looks to have been that way for quite a while. The tranny seems to shift fine now but they say it won't stay that way. The car lot is deciding right now what they want to do. So if the used car lot comes back and says your SOL and it doesn't work out with them what are my options with this truck? Do i part it out, sell it "as is", try to secure the tranny,.... what would you do.
Thanks for your help.
What is the warranty from the lot? In Maine, the usual & customary is 1000 miles or 30 days on drive train. Or As Is, is, As Is. Check your paperwork/contract before you decide if your SOL, worst comes to worse try and get your money back. forfeit the truck of course, no harm no foul.
Probly what happend is that the guy who installed the tranny afer the rebuild cross threaded the lower bolts and cause the block to crack around the bosses. I have seen it before, and there is another thread in this forum about it, except it was only 1 side that was broke.
If it were just 1 side I would say drive on, 2 sides I would be a little nervous unles its just a grocery getter. If you are going to work it and there will be any strain on the drive train I would want a short block put in.
If it is an AS-IS sale you are pretty much screwed. Sorry for the bad luck. Try to be nice to the dealer and see if they will work something out, and take any offer they make, at least see if they will pay half or more of costs. If they don't want to do anything about it then get nasty.
Then your stuck with trying to sell it and take advantage of someone else(but bad karma). Or look for a used, rebuilt, or new motor. Or drive it that way for as long as you can, just don't put a big load on the motor. Don't want it to rip off the tranny.
Well i'm meeting with them tomorrow about we are going to do to work this out. They admitted that the issue was there way before i bought it and said they new nothing about it. They said they are going to take care of me and ask what i wanted to do. I told them i want me money back or a comparable truck in trade. They said that we will look around the lot tomorrow but i might have to go up in price. I them told them that i'm on a tight budget and it would have to be in the same price range...they said they will see what they can do. Actually they have been pretty nice so far about the whole thing. So will see Thurs morning. Wish me luck!
ohh the truck had 140k in miles for those who asked.
If you like the truck I would push for a long block as well. I beleive the warranty is 5/100k on the engine and internal parts. If they go that route, you get to keep your truck, have the V10, and drive happy.
The V10 is an aluminum block isn't it? Just have it welded up while still in the truck by a qualified welder. I've welded up all kinds of broken transmissions, engines, heads, intakes, you name it.
I have even welded back together a turbo shaft that broke in half for a guy.
