I just got an 01 F-350 with the V10. I want to change the muffler for some tone and gas mileage (did a home air intake). For best results i know that a dual X would be ideal, but I dont have the $ to drop. I got 13 MPG coming from PA to VA and would like to squeeze out 14. (70 mph cruise).
i bought a flowmaster for my 5.4 and i like the sound and it helped my gas mileage a little bit.i went that route because i didnt have a ton of money for one either.if i recall it was a 60 series single in/out
I had a single in-dual out 40 series Flowmaster on my 01' SD 5.4. It sounded really good, but it was a little loud with the turndown tips I had installed. Not real sure how it will sound on the V10, but I'm sure it will sound good. One thing to watch out for is drone. My 40 series always had a constant drone....the more expensive systems, like Corsa, are designed to only get loud when you smash on the GEAUX pedal.
As for duels or a X over, that will probably hurt your performance and mileage more than it will help. V10 don't like duels. Also as for your air intake it only lightens your wallet then helping the mpg's. The stock air filter and intake is very well desighend.
I learned the hard way with my intake. I wish I knew that before I spent money for mine. Also a tune from Mike at 5-star would help more.
you honestly could prolly get your 14 by only going 60 or 65..... but in all honesty on the exhaust, it's all on you preference of tone for which muffler to get. Go on you tube, there's a bunch of videos.
Unfortunately for you, the factory intake and muffler are VERY good pieces, and objective testing has shown negligable, if any, improvement in mpg by messing with them.
But you can get a different sound.
Warning: The V10 is not a V8 and will NEVER sound like a V8. Most of us find that a loud V10 just sounds obnoxious... Like a V6 on steroids. Totally ricer. And when towing.... Eccch. The droning is absolutely horrible.
I went with FlowMaster Big Block 50. Being the biggest Flowmaster made, it has the deepest yet quietest tone with almost none of the typical FM drone or raspy metallic sound. Can still talk inside the cab, even when towing heavy up long grades. It is a bit louder (probably 3-6 dB) and deeper sounding than stock. The only downside is they are not stainless, so would be quite short lived in salt zones.
To get another 1 mpg, your best bet is to slow down about 5 mph. 13 is pretty darned good for this truck! They are made to WORK. But the laws of physics mean the massive weight and poor aerodynamics that come with that are not conducive to economy!
If you need to get 14 without slowing down, your best bet is to lower it as much as you can live with, and use the smallest, narrowest tires that will meet your load requirements. Both will help windage, and smaller tires are quite a bit lighter.
A custom tune by Mike at 5 Star may gain a bit as well, but more importantly, make it much more functional and pleasing to drive. He corrects some of the WOT issues and incorporates MUCH better shifting strategies for the trans.
Thanks for all the responses. i paid virtually nothing for the intake. hmm... the tune sound interesting. i noticed the tranny likes to stay in 1st gear linger than i would with a stick. i akso apreciate the tip on keeping it single. guess the 2v likes back pressure. Vonx... i like the way the magna flows sound. im torn btw the magna and 40 series. I reiterate... thanks for the advice guys.
I have a regular old Flowmaster 40 series on my truck with no other power mods and I really like the way it sounds, especially when you get right next to a wall and can keep the engine at 2200 RPM... Sounds sweet!
Not overly loud, never noticed any annoying sounds when towing either... I really like it.
Also, I have noticed when coming down hills and gearing down, the thing sounds a lot like a Cummins, lol
Flowmaster released a stainless steel exhaust system for the '08-'10 V10 trucks, and I think there is a stainless version for the older trucks. I ordered a SS system for my truck about a month ago but it has not arrived yet.
