BDP Fuel Sump

Been pretty absent lately so I figured I would post up some what I did today.

I was tired to sucking fuel through a straw so I went to a fuel sump.

Was super easy to install. One thing I was wondering.. Is the factory pump super quiet? Now with the sump on there I can barely hear the pump run. Had to climb under and get close to hear it.

And now the Pics!!

Very nice Andrew, seen quite a few of these lately, and like the idea.

Does it concern you that it's on the bottom of the tank exposed? Or will the skid plate still be functional? My fear is crossing a levy or off roading it could get snagged and dump 35 gals or so. I gess if you don't do these things it doesn't concern you. Lol!

Look under your truck. How often do you drag your axles?? You pretty much have to drag them or the frame to get up into the fuel tank.

I could put my skid plate back on if I wanted. No need for what I do. It would take a rock flying up on the highway in a one in a million scenario.

Kinda the same thinking with the Fumoto valve (for draining engine oil)... if you're up in there high enough to screw up the pan because the valve hangs down, you're gonna be screwing up a whole lot of other things before you get to that point. However, I would probably build me a skid plate anyways just because stranger things have happened to me.

Looks good.

I'm currently developing a much less costly sump kit option out of custom machined synthetic material (can't say what it is until I've finished my research and development effort). My initial information tells me that there is absolutely no diesel absorption or permeation into the material I'm investigating even after ten years of constant exposure, and if I go with at least 1/4" thickness, there should be more than adequate strength for the various fittings as well as resistance to rock impacts from underneath.

Pete-
Do you have any updates on your research with the sump kit you were working on?

Sorry to say... not yet. The gentleman I was working with had an accident, and I've been snowed under. I'll try to make contact with him this morning and see if he's put any further thought into what he and I last discussed... perhaps this can become a fall project for me to get completed.

Will do. I have been able to confirm that the material I'm considering is receiving high ratings for compatibility with both diesel and biodiesel service. I called my contact this morning, and he's out until Tuesday of next week. I'm also going to speak with a few other contacts I have in my local area to start researching the machinability issues.

As for the skid plate, you can always cut a hole through it to make way for a sump, which is what I plan to do myself when I get to that point.

cool sounds good.
maybe for an extra few $$$ in the sump kit you could suppy a round peice of steel plate that has been pressed into a shallow bowl shape, so after cutting a hole for the sump it could be welded to the bash plate to offer clearence and extra protection..
just a thought, cause thats probably what i would do with mine, only because when i go bush to my favorite fishing spot the wash outs that are graded into the tracks sometimes make my car belly out a tad..

So this is prety much an alternative to doing the intank mod? Do you still use the factory setup out the top of the tank?
