Changing gears
Question...on a 1983 f150,5.8l engine, three speed, 4X4. When proceeding from 0 mph, my pickup tends to switch from first to second at 5-10mph, then second to third at 20-30mph. Is this normal? It seems like there's no hitch it it's giddy-up. Once I'm in third and cruising around 40-60, the truck has plenty of accelerating power. Any opinions would be nice.

Sounds normal. They want to get it in third gear as soon as possible to help fuel efficiency. If you hold the pedal down more, or to the floor, this should delay the shifts and let it wind up more. Also if your kickdown is hooked up and working, if you are cruising along and nail the throttle to the floor, it should downshift to 2nd gear.
