I'm having a hard time finding rear brake shoes for a 50 F-3.
I found one place that carries them and they are outragous. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there are some other places out there that carry these big shoes. It doesn't help that I don't have a core either.
Thanks for the help!
F-3 rear drums are not the same as the F-2, the F-3 drums are larger along with the shoes. Do search of this board and you find a lot of discussions about them. The prevailing thought is to swap in a newer, pre-'73 F-250 rear end. This allows you to be able to find parts and wheels that will fit over the rear drums easier.
Having the shoes relined is about your only option, figure that'll cost between $15-20 each. I just had a set done for a '37 Buick locally and it cost $60 for the four shoes on the back axle. Before doing this get your drums checked first, there isn't a lot of tolerance from stock allow to turn them down.
He doesn't have the old brake shoes to send in for relining.
I didn't catch that for some reason. He could still search the posts pertaining to the F-3 rear axles and if he still wants to keep the F-3 set up he could try contacting some of the guy that might have done the swap, maybe they still have their F-3 parts. I've had a couple of F-3 and scrapped the rear axles without any consideration because there's no demand for them. He could also find a F-2 axle somewhere, I know they're laying around from all of the guys who have pulled them out to swap in 1/2 ton axles.
Irondragon did a swap some time ago but he still might have his F-3 parts, he was in western MI.
I scrapped a 14" drum axle a few months ago, and kick myself because I just hauled home the '50 F-3 M-H. Never fails, as soon as you think you don't need something, you do. Stu
There was a guy here recently selling 2 48-50 trucks f-2 and f3 both had 14" rear drums iirc? i contemplated buying them both but didnt. maybe he still has them?
I just tore my '49 F3 Timken split axle apart.. I sold the carrier and the axles. I still have the axle housing, and drums, I would assume that the brake shoes are still inside the drums..I never had them apart and who knows what the previous owner has done, but I will check it out. I can't do it tonight, but maybe tomorrow night. Let me know if that would help.
I'll take 2 dollars for the parts and $600 for the labor.
Ok just kidding....
I was going to remove the ring gear from the carrier, but they are riveted on? no bolts.
thanks guys. I would like to swap the rear axle (someday down the road). Gota have a project next winter to do right. Mainly trying to get the truck on the road and still have a big list of things to get and do. Would like to find a set of rear shoes so i can have them relined. thanks again
