I took my 2005 excursion 6.0 in to have an oil leak checked and got a call from the service advisor that the leak was coming from a gasket that seals the upper and lower halves of the block. For the life of me I can't seem to make sense of this and looking at online parts breakdowns I can't seem to find such a gasket. The service writer said that the engine would have to come out for this repair. The repair parts and labor she said would be in the $3500 range.
The leak is coming from the rear of the oilpan/bell housing area so I was figuring a rear main or oil pan.
Any insight as to what this gasket might be?
On a side note I am picking up the truck because I found out that the dealer that I bought it from screwed up the extended service contract and did not have that the truck was a diesel. Make sure to check your paperwork to avoid denials for repair!!!
It will leak a drop or two after a good weekend of driving but when it sits during the week(my wife and I commute together during the week to save some cash) there is the same little spot hanging from the bell housing. Im not too worried about it but my wife doesnt like the leak and it would make her feel better without the leak. I think I will put some dye in it tonight and give it a good drive and trace it from there just to be sure. The way the advisor described the leak was that it was from a seal that separated the 2 halves almost in the middle of the block. I have been wrenching now for almost 20 years(mostly import) and what she had said just didnt hit me right.
Thanks for the info and breakdown-I think that she was trying to explain things to me as if I had no clue what was under the hood. After seeing that pic it makes sense to me why she would explain what was wrong in that way.
I'm in a similar boat. I have a small leak that comes after it says for a day or so since I commute with my wife as well. I drive it every weekend and on Monday, I don't see any drips, but come Tuesday morning, I'll see one or two drips. I'm trying to find where it's coming from as well. I wanted to see if mine sounded similar to yours.
check both the cam and crank sensors for oil leaking around them, also loo at the front cover. lot of things look like bedplate leaks I only had to do a few bedplates as most are found to be from some place else.
