Since I don't have speakers on my work computer, I'll have to watch it again at home toinight. However, it seems to me the poor SOB made a decision and has to live with the consequences. I fully support his right to burn the flag. His choice of venue, however, wasn't the smartest choice.
Stu, he didn't just take his own flag to a VFW compound and burn it on the property....He lowered the VFW flag which was on the flagpole and burned it.........
Injury to personal property with VFW as the 'victim'.......

Let's just say I will agree to disagree with you Stu37d when it comes down to the right to burn an American Flag. In my opinion, No One has the right to burn Our flag, Sometimes it is ones duty too. But even then it is done properly with respect in a set ceramony. This un-named individual should be trialed for treason and punished as such. Countless men and women have paid the ultimate price defending our Flag and what it stands for. I pray I never witness someone trying to burn it. I would proudly stand in front of a jury of my peers and justify my actions. Post tramatic stress disorder, or flashback label it however you wish, I call it carrying out an Oath to defend against all enemies, Foreign and domestic. He got off lucky. I believe our County Sherriff Steve Bizzell would agree, it would be justified. Welcome to Johnston County.

It's not a free speech matter.
Sorry, I had to get to the other job as soon as I walked in the door last night. Still haven't watched it, but I get the gist of it now. (Thanks for pointing it out) From what you described, he's lucky he didn't get an ***-whoopin as well (or did he?).

I think flag burning is wrong. Freedom of speech goes both ways... you can't believe in free speech when it suits you, you either belive in it or you don't.

Countless men and women have paid the ultimate price defending our Flag and what it stands for. I pray I never witness someone trying to burn it. Me, either. But I think exercising your own free speech would be better than assaulting the flag burner.
I would proudly stand in front of a jury of my peers and justify my actions. Would you proudly go to jail for assault, too?
Post tramatic stress disorder, or flashback label it however you wish, I call it carrying out an Oath to defend against all enemies, Foreign and domestic. I took the same oath a few times. But it was to defend the country, not assault someone expressing his free speech rights.

Knowing a little more about the story, I would agree that he got off lucky.
Every time I hear this poem at a retirement ceremony, I choke up a little (OK, a LOT):
<TABLE style="BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 bg*************** border=0><TBODY><TR><TD noWrap>My Name Is Old Glory</TD><TD noWrap></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
</TD></TR><TR><TD width="100%" bg***************>I am the flag of the United States of America
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over great institutes of learning.
I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world.
Look up! And see me!
I stand for peace, honor, truth, and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident . . . I am arrogant.
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher,
my colors a little truer.
I bow to no one.
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped.
I am saluted.
I am respected.
I am revered. I am loved.
And I am feared.
I have fought every battle of every war for more than 200 years...
Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomatox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,
the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome, the beaches of Normandy,
the deserts of Africa, the cane fields of the Philippines,
the rice paddies and jungles of Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam,
and a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were with me.
I was there!
I led my soldiers.
I followed them.
I watched over them...
They loved me.I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima.
I was dirty, battle-worn and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me,
and I was proud.
I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries
I have helped set free.
It does not hurt . . . for I am invincible.
I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of my country,
and when it is by those with whom I have served in battle . . . it hurts.
But I shall overcome . . . for I am strong.
I have slipped the bonds of Earth
and stand watch over the uncharted new frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have been a silent witness to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hour comes
when I am torn into strips to be used for bandages
for my wounded comrades on the field of battle.
when I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers...
and when I lie in the trembling arms
of a grieving mother at the graveside of her fallen son.

That was probably one of the options he opt'ed out of.
Good post stu. Awesome poem. But as for go to jail for assault proudly too, my reply is Damn Skippy. See the funny thing about jail is, unless you kill someone or something horrible they let you out. To some point I agree with you on freedom of speech. We do have freedom of speech ,but there is no freedom of actions. Burning our Flag is an action, not a statement. I am not out to attack anyone on here but in person if I saw someone burn our Flag, I would step in and defend it. If I had to go to jail for that, so be it. I find no shame in that at all. All that is required for evil to prevail is that good men do nothing. This is one of those subjects that will touch each person differently. Everyone is right in their own beliefs. This is what makes out Nation so great. We are allowed to discuss, without animosity our opinions. Well my parts just got here back to work.
Well, I finally got to see the story. He's very lucky he didn't suffer a much worse fate than he did. Freedom of speech had little to do with it. He stole something from the VFW, and as such, got a little learnin' from those veterans. Could have easily been much worse...
When My Flag, of MY Country, has reached it's end of life I replace it and it is burned.
There is a funeral home here that takes them and drapes them over the coffin of a veteran that is being cremated.
I feel that that is the best form of respect that I could possibly provide.
