New to the forum, have researched my project for a year now but finally think I have the parts collected to do the swap, looking for any tips or recommendations on project 12v 77 highboy Thanks
Good luck with your swap. I have a 77.5 F250 4X4 that I did the cummins swap last year. I had a 460 and loved it but couldn't take the 5-6 mpg while pulling my 5th wheel and boat. I now get 12-13 mpg from the Cummins. I haven't regretted it for a minute. FordCummins is a good sight for information on this swap.
For the money you can make better mounts yourself. There are several options for radiators. If you set the motor back far enough you can use the stock Ford with a few modifications to the rad itself. I've seen some where guys use 1st gen dodge radiators with some slight modification to the core support.
I used the radiator from my 460 and have had no problems. My radiator, and condensor bolt in the stock position. The intercooler is from the 93 Cummins I used. The only issue is the stock grille inserts have to be trimmed to compensate for the depth of the intercooler. The only other trimming was on the front crossmember.
oh i wish i had the time!! freind of mine blew up the 5sp trany on his 05 dodge 1ton service truck and for $1700.00 for a used one he decided to sell the truck for parts i have access to the 05 mech 12v cummins for free and would love to put that into my f350 s/c and only need to re-ring/re-bearing it for $1300.00 that ford cummings site is great it seems they have done the r&d and would do this swap in a minit if it wasnt for the crossmember issue
What transmission did you use? I was planning on the nv4500. Did you build your own motor mounts?
I made my own mounts, and used the nv4500 that came in my donor truck. I used the stock trans crossmember and modified it just slightly to make it work with the nv4500.
Thanks to Chase and a few others I took some of their ideas and tweaked them to make my motor mounts.
Take the time and read through a ton of swap threads and when you tired of that read a few more. You will learn a ton of things that you had no idea could be an issue. What's better is you probably know of three different ways to solve the issue.
Also, on a different forum a member just posted about some issues of poor fitting parts and bad customer service from ford cummins.
snoop around the "motor swaps" forum here. There's a bunch of us doing the cummins swaps.
I want to put a Cummins 12 v into a 1987 F 250 to replace the 6.9 diesel, and I want to have it done. Are there any shops here in Southern Calif where I can get this all done? I do not want to attempt it on my own.
you bumped a 2 month old thread to ask about an 80's truck in the 70's forum? Use this thing called google and find yourself some shops, then email or pick up the phone and call them to see if they can do it. If you are close to destroked or fordcummins they could do it. I'm sure whatever shop does it will charge several thousand dollars, and, quite frankly, the 80's trucks are worth less than that even in fantastic shape, because they are ugly pieces of crap. lol

While I agree with some Haste said (sorry but 80-86 front ends are my least favorite in these trucks) I can be a little more help.
IMO, cummins really messed up by never successfully marketing the 4bt for the light duty truck market. Think of how many F150's or dodge 1500's would have been sold over the years if they had the 4 bt in them. Its a great motor and if you don't want to do any super heavy hauling (I think most lower end 4bt builds end up around like what 400 ft lbs? ) it gets good gas mileage and makes nice rattly diesel sounds. Short power band but so are most other diesels of the era. And 4bt fits in things a little better. 6bt is a big bitch.
