I have a 02' Limited V10 with 202xxx and have come across a new issues recently.
Occasionally when I start up the truck it spits out blue smoke BUT its only when it fires up then it's done.
If it is not using more than a quart in 1000 miles I would not worry about it. It is normal for older vehicles to smoke a little on startup, especially when it is cold out and they have not been run for a while. Mine does that as well and most of my others do it during startup on cold days. Valve seals don't do too well when it is cold out. They loose all their flexability.
I drive the truck every day for work though so I don't see why it would be doing that after cooling down over just the night.
Worn out valve stem seals will allow miniscule amount of oil to ooze down into the cylinder overnight. In the morning when you fire it up, the oil burns off. Puff of blue smoke.
While the engine is running or you stop at a store, it does not have enough time to build up the oil in the cylinder. Overnight, yes.
Everyone with a V10 try this experiment and I will almost guarantee you will see a short puff of smoke on fire up.
1) Get in your vehicle and start it up but only let it run for 10-15 seconds.
2) Turn it off and let it sit 1-2 days like over a weekend (could be shorter this isn't exactly scientific).
3) The NEXT time you fire it up...you will have a big puff of smoke that only lasts a few seconds and it will be gone.
4) Report back results.
Whenever I get in my truck and move it out of the garage and then back into the garage and then it sits for many days...the next time I start it I get that puff...mine has been doing this since 14K miles when I purchased it in 2005...I now have 53K...always happens after that short run and long sit...
Interesting Joe. Thinking back, both times I noticed the cloud I had started the truck (cold) for a few seconds, shut it off for 2-3 mins and then poof on startup. Rather disconcerting when it happened, but all seemed normal after that. Not quite the same as your description, but maybe the short run has something to do with it. Pooling some cold oil around the seals or something?
Decided not to worry about it, it uses a quart about every 2-3 K. I adopted the dealer's favorite phrase for that, "it's normal"!
