I have a 66 F250, 2WD, im trying to change the ring and pinion, but before i order any parts, i want to make sure i order the right parts, i cant find any tags on the differential, I've read on the forums people talking about the dana 60 and the ford 9, i was wondering if someone could tell me how to determine which one i have without having a tag to check. Thank you in advance for any help
okay, thanks for that bit of info their Jo, is there any visual check i can do to confirm its a dana 60? or someway of knowing for sure? im hoping to get the ring and pinion ordered tonight/tomorrow, and get it all changed out when i get back in town next weekend.
And would you happen to have any knowledge on the USA STANDARD GEAR ring and pinions? any problems with them? or are they safe to use? they're the cheapest i've found the ring and pinion so far wanted to see if anyone has any input on them before i find out some dark secret later down the road about them.
The 9in is 5 lug, the Dana 8. Why don't you post your VIN that way we can tell you how it left the factory, as long as you don't think it has been swapped.
I personally don't know what the differences are between the Dana 60 & the 70. Visually I suspect they look the same.

If it's an F250, it's a Dana 60. All the bearings and bearing cups have a BIN stamped on them. BIN = Bearing Industry Number. What every autoparts store and bearing shop goes by.
The rear axle ID tag is (was) located under one of the bolts that retain the inspection cover to the housing, but many are missing today.
