I have a 1996 ford econoline 150. My speedometer began jumping, & hard shifts. At first it did it then after a short time of driving it would stop. also the abs light would come on when the speedo jumed. Now the speedo jumps erratically all the time.
I replaced the vss. the abs light doesnt come on , yet the speedo still jumps along with some hard shifting.
When was the last time you changed the rear end oil ? I had similar issues and constant PO500 codes ...changed the sensor / changed the harness...finally changed the diff oil and cleaned the reluctor gear and inside housing spotless , problem went away...It would apear that the fluid was contaminated with metal flakes enough to corrupt the ABS signal and throw the codes / hard shifting etc.etc.
Than you for your reply. To answer your question. I just bought the van. So I have no idea when the rear end oil was changed. However, to note, when I did replace the vss on the rear end, the old one came out in pieces. the magnet was left in the rear end, I had to use pinter plyers to grab the bottom part that was left in the rear end. So I assume maybe some metal shaving may be in there from that. I will try changing the oil in the rear end and see if this helps.
Ive been trying to read post on this, most have been in regards to f150's, not my Econoline 150, & Ive read that there may be a modul issue somewhere?? what do you know about this?
If I were you I would change the rear end oil first....then change the transmission filter and fluid....you most likely have the E4OD like I do and they do not like dirty fluid or heat.... the "modul" you might be referring to might be the solenoid pack inside the trans....when that goes ,it does not shift at all, manually only ..Regardless you need to read codes when you see the light flash and pray you do not get the dreaded TC slip code .... Because when that happens it is new Tranny time and real expensive . Since I have a Powerstroke so I had to put extra cooling on mine because I make over 550 lbs ft of Torque and I know it is only a matter of time before my tranny blows....so far so good but I am constantly looking for one to rebuild with HD parts and TC so when mine does blow I will be ready....
Thanks again for your reply. The thing I was talking about that I had read when researching about the jumping speedo besides the vss,, was something else. Anyways, Ill change the rear end fluid. Clean chec the inside of the differential. We'll see what happens
